Let's get inspired: Who Shot Rock & Roll. EXHIBITION

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki will present the popular photographic exhibition, Who Shot Rock and Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 - Present.

Overview

Who Shot Rock & Roll travels to New Zealand with 173 works from more than 100 photographers and many rare and never-before-exhibited images. Photographers include Diane Arbus, Roberta Bayley, Henry Diltz, Godlis, Dennis Hopper, David LaChappelle, Annie Leibovitz, Linda McCartney and Albert Watson.

Organised by the Brooklyn Museum and curated by photographic historian and author Gail Buckland, Who Shot Rock & Roll is the first museum exhibition to acknowledge photographers for their collaborative and creative role in the history of popular music.

'This exhibition is not a history of rock-n-roll, but of the men and women who have photographed it and given the music its visual identity,' says Buckland. 'From its earliest days, rock-n-roll was captured in photographs that personalised and frequently eroticised musicians. Photographers were handmaidens to the rock-n-roll revolution, and their work communicates the social and cultural transformations that rock helped bring about from the 1950s onwards.'

'Through Who Shot Rock & Roll we continue to build on our international programme of presenting high quality exhibitions to Auckland,' says Gallery Director Chris Saines. 'Who Shot Rock & Roll is a vibrant and engaging depiction of the revolutionary history of rock-n-roll. From Albert Wertheimeir's photographs of a young Elvis Presley through to Allen Tannenbaum's John and Yoko in Bed and the frenzied energy of a moshpit captured by Charles Peterson, this exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity for New Zealanders to experience the influential work of many talented international photographers up close.'

The Auckland exhibition is the first time Who Shot Rock & Roll will have travelled outside of the United States. It is the second international exhibition presented by Auckland Art Gallery since its reopening on 3 September 2011.

I organised the Shutterbug date because I couldn't wait to see the exhibition. It was well worth it. I urge everyone to see it whether you are interested in photography or the music and the history of both. I hope you enjoy it.
