The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Stephen King says this novel ranks among the greatest supernatural novels: "Indeed, it seems to me that it and [Henry] James's The Turn of the Screw are the only two great novels of the supernatural in the last hundred years."

Based on the reviews I read on Amazon, there are plenty of people who disagree with King but it's a classic and should be fun to discuss.  The novel is about 250 pages, and there should be a few copies at Half Price Books and at the library.
