Do you absolutely love documentaries? Are you a documentarian? Or are you just someone who'd like to to hang out with other documentary fans ?
The Austin Documentary Fans meet-up is the place for anyone interested in watching, discussing and screening the latest (and sometimes past) documentaries.
We are a diverse group of people from various cultures, races, and nationalities. Our documentaries are about all sorts of subjects however, we especially like documentary about topics that affects us all (the macro issues), rather if it is about the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, artist, intriguing individuals, we like thought provoking and also entertaining documentaries. What we are not
This isn't a political minded group, with any kind of pro/anti agenda or a group with a certain ideology other than loving humanity and wanting to use the tools of knowledge to make this earth a better place because we support life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
We also like to approach topics where discussion is open on both sides. Films all have their bias, but we try to present the films we feel will offer something of value to our members. That's the only way to keep things balanced, because our members are individuals with their own ideas, and philosophies and feelings.
"A documentary film is a nonfictional motion picture intended to document some aspect of reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record. "(source: wikipedia.org)
One thing we strive to do is to expand our horizons by selecting thought provoking films. Sometimes our films are just funny and entertaining.
If this all sounds like your cup of tea, then jump right in. We'd love to have you.
Docs we watch:
ADF'ers especially like films that are thought provoking, about culture (i.e Faubourg Tremé), art /Music(i.e Ai WeiWei the Provocative Chinese Artist, Hands On a Hardbody, Sound City), that affects us all as a society (i.e Chasing Ice), historical, moving, inspiring, thought provoking, intriguing (Ping Pong, a film about 80+ year olds' competing in world competition) ...social topics of interest (i.e. Girl Rising, A Place At The Table).
ADF members occasionally lean heavily on issues about agriculture/ nature – our water, food the planet. Social / Political (Yellow Fever) Agriculture/Nature (i.e. More Than Honey). Feel free to check out our previous events. Film suggestions are encouraged, we ask that you stay within our guidelines.
What we need:
We need all our members to contribute to the group fees in order that the group is easy to join without the fuss of membership dues. This will change if we do not receive enough donations and sponsorship. We love members who want to be a part of the planning and not just a back seat driver. Isn't it great when you see our volunteers at events welcoming you? Ah you haven't seen any lately? Well that is because very few people have volunteered for certain events. Remember, our group is what we all make of it. If we add something to the group we get so much out of it as a whole.
Are are a webmaster and would like to volunteer some of your free time to keep our website running smoothly, and updated? Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org?
