2014 Quarterly Discussions: The Series We Love

The Chronicles of Amber: Books 1-5 by Roger Zelazny. So start reading now cause we've got books 1-5 of the 15 books from The Chronicles of Amber.

Goodreads link:

Amber is the one real world, casting infinite reflections of itself - shadow worlds, which can be manipulated by those of royal Amberite blood. But the royal family is torn apart by jealousies and suspicion; the disappearance of the patriarch Oberon has intensified the internal conflict by leaving the throne apparently for grabs; and amnesia has robbed Corwin, Crown Prince of Amber his memory - even the fact that he is rightful heir to the throne.

The Chronicles of Amber is Zelazny's finest fantasy, a grand imaginative vision of alternate worlds, magic, swordplay, and murderous rivalries.

We'll choose either to continue with Amber or take a break and move on to one of the other series that we all love.

We'll meet on the 2nd Saturday of the 2nd month of each quarter.

Sorry to bail last minute. Glad I reread the books, though. Observations: he uses "dig" a lot. Was that supposed to "ground" Corey/Corwin? The later books reek of retcon (look it up), especially when everyone's trying to explain their actions in the first book. It's like zelazny looked back and realized he'd written himself into a corner and then had to dance from plot point to plot point. Some of it barely holds together....

Since I had to look it up: "Retroactive continuity, or retcon for short, is the alteration of previously established facts in the continuity of a fictional work."

Just confirming it is 130 as Lori's message suggests not 1.

Can't make it, to my great dismay. And it's one of my most influential reads.

Hey y'all don't worry if you haven't finished all the books. Please come & participate, listen & enjoy the company of fellow readers.

I'm bailing out! I didn't get past the first book -- But I will definitely still be there for Jonathan Strange!

I'm asking for volunteers. If you've really gotten into this, please let me know some of your observations about the series, the author, technical aspects of the series, and anything else you REALLY want to talk about Corwin & Amber during our get together. Ciao!

Anyone make a reservation for this yet?

Hey Chad, sorry I didn't answer before. Yep, I confirmed the room this evening! See you tomorrow.

Hey folks, I've confirmed the room! We've got the Cellar at Genuine Joe's from 1:30 - 4:00pm. We do NOT have to use all the time, but i'm sure we will find something to talk about with 5 books to discuss. I've made an agenda, so we can do about 20-30 minutes per book, and then an all out, all over discussion of the series in general. We will save the last 15 minutes for picking our series for our next meeting in May! Please keep in mind, a series must have at least 3 books long, and 2014 is our Fantasy year. We'll do Sci/Fi in 2015! See y'all tomorrow!

I'll be there - first timer.

I read these ages ago, but just seeing the names Corwin and Oberon, and the mention of shadow worlds, reminded me how much I enjoyed the series. And how Amber led me to read Zelazny's 'For A Breath I Tarry'.

I have an omnibus edition with books 1-10. For anyone who has read the whole series, would I be better off waiting to read 6-10 until after the discussion?

Everytime I have read them, I have read them back to back, as if they were one book.
