FREE HUGS at First Thursday

BruceDavid has been very active in giving passersby hugs on First Thursday for several years.  Don King has been giving out free hugs on First Thursday since the fall of 2011.

It's a lot of fun and a lot of passersby enjoy it a lot. Often, at least one or two people tell us that they really needed a hug - and they mean it.

We start at about 7:30 pm and end between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm.

Meet to the north of the Allens Boots store on South Congress Avenue, cross-street Monroe St W.  We are usually a little north (towards downtown) of Allens Boots, but sometimes all the way north at the other end of the block.

Free Hugs at First Thursday is also "advertised" on other meetup groups and on facebook.

Bring a sign that says "FREE HUGS".  There will generally be people there who have extra signs, don't count on it but if you decide you want to come at the last minute, but don't have your own sign, come anyway.

There is street parking or you can park in the parking lot of the church across the street for $5.

Bring water to drink, if it is warm, you will sweat!

Signs should have good contrast.  Black letters on thick white paper or cardboard is good.  You can see a variety of signs in the photo.  You need to be able to hold on to the sign while you are hugging, so keep that in mind.  I make my signs from 14" x 11"  posterboard (buy at a drugstore, craft store, Big Lots, etc.) using a wide point black permanent marker.  Make the letters big and bold.  the posterboard I use is thin enough that I can copy the lettering from an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper printed with "FREE HUGS" (Using a font size that fills the page in landscape mode.).  I use a window (during daylight) as a light box to do the copying.

Be respectful of the people walking by, some people will want hugs, others won't.

Give hugs to people who want them.  Have fun.

If people want to, we can go to a bar or restaurant after we finish hugging.

RSVPs are not required, but nice to do so other people won't think they will be the only one from this meetup attending.

And, of course, it is free.
