I thought it could be a Summer Tanager too, but I thought I saw some black on the wings. From below it was hard to tell their color.

Actually, I believe we saw a Summer Tanager (just as pretty)

Great hike and enjoyed chatting with folks!

Can someone remind me of the name of the red bird we saw?

    Thanks again Paul!

Correction. The cypress was 31' in circumference, not diameter.

Nice trail, especially the section north of the Balcones Canyonland Preserve... The tree was very impressive, but unfortunately doesn't win a prize https://picasaweb.google.com/117164653749730932159/LiveOakTour2010#slideshow/[masked]

A must hike in Austin. Trail was moderately challenging, shady and at the end an unbelievably huge beautiful tree greets you. Perfect time tonight, 6:30 to 8:30. Paul did a great job. Thanks.

The hike was great. Thanks, Paul. The big tree is not listed in the 1976 Historic Tree Registry. It may be that it was unknown or that it was outside the city limits. It's not the biggest, though. The biggest one I've found since I started this project early this year is 17' 2" in section 6 of Memorial Cemetery off Mo-Pac.
We could do an urban hike back through there to see some of those. There are a lot there, around Shoal Creek and Allandale.
FYI, the biggest tree in Austin in 1976 was a cypress on Town Lake, 31'10.5" diameter breast height.

We should be finished with hiking by 8:30 so flashlights not needed.
Bring water and raingear in case it tries to sprinkle.

Paul, is the park well marked? I'm VERY directionally challenged and haven't been to that part of town before. Thanks!

The weather looks great for tomorrow's hike.
Well behaved dogs are OK but the trail is narrow so a leash may be needed.

There are lots of great geocaches along this trail
