Kayak trip from Waller Creek to Snake Island (with yoga)

Meet at Waller Creek Boathouse (home of Congress Avenue Kayaks) for paddling to Snake Island, yoga, a snack, and return trip.  Bring your own kayak or canoe or rent one from Congress Avenue Kayaks at the Waller Creek Boathouse ($20 for the entire morning).

If you bring your own boat, you can launch it with us at Waller Creek Boathouse, or launch elsewhere and meet us at the start.

All participants must be able to swim and wear a personal flotation device (PFD), aka life vest.  Congress Ave Kayaks supplies PFD's to all renters.

Please bring: water, yoga mat, snack or lunch. Optional -- a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, dry bag for valuables. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting wet.

The Sierra Club appreciates a donation of a few dollars to help with our conservation and outreach programs.

The combination of the lake, kayaking and yoga was very enjoyable and a nice alternative to my usual hiking. Nice group today. Some of us enjoyed lunch overlooking the lake afterwards. Thank you to Donna and Stephanie!

I wish I had made the announcement that the parking meetings start ticking at 11 on Saturday, but didn't think about it until out on the water and then it was too late.

Great meetup Donna & Stephanie. Donna, you're on the hook for another you know. Down side for me....I got a parking ticket! Makes it a pretty expensive event.

Great outing today! Thanks Donna and Stephanie! I would definitely be interested in a 4-5 hour version for future outings. Also, anyone interested in more information on the "cut and cap" plan for I-35, please email me through my Meetup profile. Those of you who had suggestions on other folks I should talk to, please email me with the names and contact info if you have it. Thanks!

PARKING. Please leave early enough to find parking because its part of the big adventure. There may be parking spots on Trinity south of Cesar Chavez St. downtown. There's a short block there just east of The Four Seasons Hotel. If you don't get a space there, you could park on another street nearby. Or...on Rainey Street near the intersection with Holly and walk through the Mexcan Am Cultural Center to the Hike and Bike Trail and walk west on the hike and bike trail to the boathouse which you will see where the hike and bike trail hits Town Lake. Here's a map showing the location and the intersections I've mentioned here. https://maps.google.com/maps?q=74+Trinity+Street,+Austin,+TX

Donna, thanks for this info. I realized I have been to Congress for the Lake cleanups. I thought this was a different business. However you did expand on my knowledge. See you tomorrow.

Hi Stephanie - my wife and I are interested in going, and we have our own kayaks. Any possibility we can tag along? Sounds like a fun outing...

    May 13, 2013

    • Donna H.

Yes. Would you be willing to help tie up the boats on the island? We can use a hand with that. If not, no worries!

Is there any chance this outing may be repeated? It sounds wonderful, and I'm sorry it's already full.

Hello. Is there a waiting list for this event? Thank you.

    May 12, 2013

  • Donna H.

Are you bringing your yoga mats? I'll bring cording in case we need to tie them onto the kayaks. Cool, eh!

    May 9, 2013

  • Donna H.

It will be a gentle paddle on the 18th so everyone will enjoy the day. If you've never kayaked before and you want to go out for fun this weekend on your own, you can rent a kayak at Congress Ave. Kayaks which is at Waller Creek Boathouse where this trip launches from on the 18th or at Texas Rowing Center which is down by Austin HS. Its pretty easy and fun to do.

There are still spots left because the rsvps are counting those of us with kayaks as renters. So Mary Ann & Ed Crew just show up & it will be fine. I have NO yoga experience either. At least 3 of the rsvps are bringing kayaks.

Thanks Stephanie. I was worried and confused since I was an early RSVP. Maybe my post that I would borrow Andrew's kayak got in the way. As you see I am not borrowing it (sit inside which I don't care for) but Donna is. See you on the 18th and thanks!

Since I have 2 Kayaks- does that count towards the 15 seat limitation?

    May 6, 2013

    • Donna H.

I'd like to use one of them! Thank you.

      May 7, 2013

  • Ed C.

Donna, I have my own kayak if that is the only limiting factor I'd like to be included despite my limited yoga experience.

    May 6, 2013

  • Stephanie S.

at least 3 of the rsvps are bringing kayaks so that means there are till 2 rental seats available. Ed Crew could come.

    May 6, 2013

  • Donna H.

    That would probably work. Stephanie?

    May 6, 2013

  • Donna H.

Hi Ed. I can check with Darla at Congress Ave Kayaks. She may likely make more kayaks available. We'll let you know.

    May 6, 2013

  • Ed C.

I would like to attend, but at this time I see there are no spots left. If their are any cancellations please put me on the waiting list.

Hey there. I'm looking forward to leading a gentle yoga session on Snake Island.

    April 28, 2013

  • Stephanie S.

There are only 15 rental seats available so please do not RSVP for one unless you intend to come. I have my own kayak. We will have some yoga mats to borrow.
