Mayfield Park/ AMOA Laguna Gloria hike

Join us at Mayfield Park and Preserve to hike at 9:00 am on Sunday, July14.
Mayfield Park and Preserve is an island of restful respite located in the middle of Austin, Texas. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places,  this estate was presented to the city of  Austin in 1971 by Mary Mayfield Gutsch for all Austinites to enjoy as a park. It  includes 2 acres of colorful cottage gardens with towering palm trees, brilliant peacocks and delicate water lilies, all blending in beautiful harmony, as well as 21 acres of nature preserve, walking trails and wildlife habitat.
Laguna Gloria - 3809 W. 35th St.   We'll explore the sunken garden with Charles Umlauf's sculpture, the Poetess, the amphitheater, the Four Seasons garden and the Temple of Love.  AMOA-Laguna Gloria is an indoor/outdoor venue that consists of twelve acres of some of the most beautiful parkland in central Texas, including a mile of Lake Austin shoreline. Home to the Austin Museum of Art-Laguna Gloria, the site features a Mediterranean-style villa built in 1916 by Clara Driscoll, best known as savior of the Alamo.
Join us afterwards for a bite to eat at a local restaurant.
Directions From Mopac (Loop 1) head north from downtown. Exit at 35th Street and turn left (West). Follow 35th St. until it dead ends. You will pass Camp Mabry, and Mt. Bonnell Road. The entrance to the Mayfield Park is on the left.  It's ok to park along the street between Mayfield Park and AMOA - Arthouse Laguna Gloria.
No dogs allowed at either park.  In addition to the Sierra Club donation of $2 for member and $3 for non-members.

Sorry, can't make it. Life got in the way.

Both parks are small so I'd guess about 3 miles total for the two hikes. Where we eat will depend on the numbers of people wanting to meet to eat out. Options include: Russell's Bakery on Hancock Dr., Central Market or Cafe Express.

Parking is tight at Mayfield Park so you can parallel park along 35th street. Carpooling is encouraged

We are adding an additional group leader/s so we will split the group up into at least 2 groups to make it a more pleasant experience for everyone. We will all be hiking down to the Laguna Gloria grounds after we finish at Mayfield Park.

This is not an all day event. We should be done by 11:30 am at the latest. It will take 2 hours to do both as they are small parks. If you want to stay and view the art museum you are welcome to do that but it is not part of our hike.
