Sierra Club membership meeting: The Violet Crown Trail

Happy Hour / food and beverages: 6-7 pm

Socializing and informal discussions on current events:  6-7 pm

Announcements and program begin at 7 pm

Program:  The Violet Crown Trail

Soon to be open, the Violet Crown Trail will be a 34-mile regional hike-and-bike trail system that will provide public recreational and educational opportunities, connecting neighborhoods and people to parks, libraries, schools, and shopping.  Hill Country Conservancy plans to officially break ground this fall on segments of the trail connecting Zilker Park to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Veloway!

George Cofer, a sixth-generation Austinite and fifth-generation Texas rancher, is Executive Director of Hill Country Conservancy, a nonprofit land trust that marshals public and private resources to preserve the natural areas, scenic vistas, waters and rural heritage of the Texas Hill Country.

Butch Smith, Project Manager of the Violet Crown Trail for Hill Country Conservancy, worked with the Bureau of Land Management in Colorado before becoming the Senior Park Planner for the City of Austin.

Consider biking, carpooling, or taking a Cap Metro bus to the meeting.

Free parking is available after 6pm on San Jacinto, Trinity, and nearby streets.

Yes, the doors are always a problem. It is always going to be noisy in that area. Come early and find a spot up front. And if you have ideas about how to better set up the Scholz audio, let me know.

Hi, Phoebe! There are two points to control to make the sound system at Scholz' work plenty well enough for that room. First, we must keep the microphone behind the speakers. So if we can move the speakers a bit farther forward, that will help give the person at the mike a little more room to roam. George would have benefited from this adjustment. The second thing is for the speaker to speak into--not over or under--the mike. There is a fair amount of leeway; just so long as a line drawn the length of the mike points towards the mouth of the person speaking. Because George was over the mike, we could hear him clearly--until he and the mike leaned just ahead of the speakers and we started getting feedback. Those two changes will make all the difference.

It was a packed meeting. Very good presentations. I would like to commend the people that have worked so hard for so many years to insure that we have walking trails here in Austin. I am looking forward to picking up a map and to get to walking.

Parts, extending first from the neighborhoods west of Balcones District Park to the pool parking lot in Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park, and in Phase II from there to the Girl Scout Council Headquarters and TCEQ, but so far no funding to cross I-35 and connect with the nearly completed Southern Walnut Creek Trail.
