I used to sketch a lot in my teens starting out with horses (from books,) family pets, members of the family and also some landscapes. It would be nice to learn how to draw again... in pencil, color pencil, crayon, magic marker, chalk, charcoal, ink.
I am self taught apart from art classes at school and also some feedback from a sculptor who was a family friend.
A much more drastic example is the Iliad and the movie "Troy". The discrepancies are huge but I enjoyed the movie and the depiction of Achilles, Aggemennon and Hector. I got a very good sense from the film that these characters were driven by "the gods", very primal and not driven by rationalatity, which is true to the story, accuracy notwithstanding.
Kim: Thanks; I like your very studied approach. JID (Jim)
Oh, interesting, thanks! Poor little birds.
Hi Kim! I miss you at the New Yorker meetups. How are you?
Thanks for sending information on your book. Hope to see you again soon. Happy thanks & giving day.
Hi Kim, check out my facebook page at EJL's Horseback Rides.
I read Anti-Oedipus first, which was co-authored with Guattari, and I read as a second year undergraduate. It's taken me many years of studying Psychoanalysis (especially Lacan) to figure out what they're trying to do there; and I wouldn't recommend starting with it. 1000 Plateaus is in the vein of Anti-Oedipus. Deleuze's Nietzsche and Philosophy is both a great study of Nietzsche and a very good way to gain entry into Deleuze as a thinker. Cheers. D
The best intro to Deleuze for a beginner is the book Spinoza: Practical Philosophy especally chapters 2 and 6. Then try Proust and Signs or Nietzsche and Philosophy. The core of his own philosophy is in Difference and Repetition and The Logic of Sense, but these are very hard works to read for beginners. If you do read the book on Marcel Proust, you might want to read my book The Force of Time: An Introduction to Deleuze through Proust.
Nice! I like Bell Mountain wines also - and well, hopefully you'll find Westcave Cellars to be a great hang out place for all your wino friends =D
I'll look forward to seeing you tomorrow evening, Kim.
