SXSW Music Day/Night on the Water (2)

Don’t miss it - FREE concerts at the SXSW Auditorium Shores Stage on Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin. The stage will have a variety of food and beverages, The Market at Auditorium Shores and free music with Austin’s magnificent skyline as the backdrop. Is there a better way to spend a beautiful March evening?

We will gather @ Joe's Crab Shack from 12:00 p.m. There is plenty of parking.  Be in the water @ 12:30 p.m. and paddle to Auditorium Shores from there.  We will be able to listen to a few bands from the kayaks... lineup is as follows:

Plan is to head back to Joe's Crab Shack when your done... pick your departure time.  If you stay for all bands (8+ hours haha), message Dan Walker and you get a free T-Shirt! And seriously if you stay out for the whole time please call a cab!! Don't call Cathy.

Couple of requirements you must have a light on your kayak "after dark" for safety and a life jacket must be on!!

Bring your own Refreshments!!

It was good to meet some fellow kayakers. The wine and raspberries were a welcome surprise. Can’t wait to do it again.

Didn't RSVP, but I put in at AHS. Mostly staying along the shore. My bright green kayak is probably fairly noticeable...

I work at the Convention Center and the traffic along I35 has been as bad as any year. Joe's has plenty of parking, but how is it to get to it ? I think I may put in at Austin high and just paddle down to meet you guys... also, bike blinkies make good lights if you don't already have a boat light.

Good tip on suggesting folks bring a PFD and a light for after dark to avoid getting a ticket.

I have used two kinds of kayak deck lights personally.

      1. Hydrostar

      http://shop.nykayak.c...

This is available under many brand names. I had a few problems with this kind. The suction cup worked poorly (it wasn't molded properly and was too stiff). It kept coming off the kayak. After one summer, the base of the suction cup finally tore. I kept the light around, hooking it to the deck bungee. Then, the body just disintegrated one day.

      2. Paddler Supply Company

      http://www.rei.com/pr...

This one has been going strong for three years. I use it in freshwater and saltwater environment. Left it in the Jeep all the time, and there hasn't been stiffness issues with the suction cup or the plastic body. Worth the money.

Traffic will be a problem... consider creative ways to make your way to Joe's Crab Shack. I found 71 to 1st to Barton Springs to works well. Thanks John for that tip.

Do you think I can put in on the opposite shore (East Ave & I35)? In other words, will there be anywhere to park there?

    March 5, 2013

    • Bill S

There are many put-in spots that you can choose. There's Zilker park itself (unlikely), Austin High School (plausible), Red Bud isle and paddle down (good workout), Rowing Dock, The Gazebo next to NoName Island and paddle up (not too bad). Along Pleasant Valley and paddle up (still reasonable).

This is about as perfect as perfect gets. I can stay for most of the time before heading back to my dog in Killeen. I will have some cans of Blue Moon and oranges to share on the water. My plan is to make and freeze some pulled pork to keep the Blue Moons cold and to share once thawed. See you on the water next SAT.
