Paddle San Marcos River - Part IV

Back by popular demand, we will paddle a punchy section of the San Marcos River. This stretch includes Broken Bone and Cottonseed Rapids and a portage around Martindale Dam. We will arrange our shuttle plan over breakfast at Taco Cabana. Goal is to have paddles in the water by 10am to avoid the tuber invasion. Please bring $5.00 for pull-out fees at Shady Grove campground in Martindale. If you need to rent kayaks and gear, please reserve directly with Spencers Canoes in Martindale: http://www.spencercanoes.net (512) 357-6113. Also posting this on Central Texas Paddlers meetup.

Thanks for another great day on the river. This group definitely grooves on the rope swing! Really enjoyed the camaraderie especially lunching at and running Cottonseed Rapids. Stay tuned for one last summer jaunt on the San Marcos River to be scheduled toward end of August.

Looking forward to the trip - bringing my husband with me.

Would love to come, but I am a beginner and have a snap together sit on top kayak, my husband would want to come and then it would be a 2 person snap together. And we both don't know what we are doing. We are great in claim water, except when we are padding together, then we sometimes go in circles. LOL We might be good, for a good laugh for everyone. But seriously, would this be too tough for our skill level?

I believe the trip two weeks ago would have been better for you. Try kayaking together on flat water Lady Bird Lake or Lake Austin, until you get comfortable. Keep eyes open for flat water Meetup trip to watch bats. Then come on San Marcos trip when you know what you're doing....

      LOL, ok thanks

Can you tell me more about the portage? Any vertical hauling? Nothing like the takeout on the Pedernales I hope!

    July 28

    • Jim R.

I heard about that "Bataan march redo" from some who suffered through it, apparently in/out portages were not scouted/explained beforehand. These are easy portages many of us have done for years. Every San Marcos kayaker has to drop their boat over Cummings dam, a dry 20' drop down steep abutment using your 15'+ bow or stern line. Everyone helps, so there's not any heavy lifting involved.

Sorry I have to cancel. My whole family, including me as of yesterday, has flu symptoms so I am parked at home. I will be missing a good paddle.

We appreciate you thinking of us and not spreading the H1N1 flu (or West Nile Virus?)

    Julian,
Have your own yak/gear on car, and meet at the Taco Cabana.
We meet/greet, inform all what section we will be doing, and organize the shuttle to drop boats at top end, pay the small launch fees IN CASH, and run most cars to bottom end - bringing all drivers back to top end. Its a beautiful stretch. If you miss it, you'll be sorry.

Hello I live in San Marcos and am wondering how this all is coordinated. How are we to get out kayaks to the drop in point, and how do we get back? $5 Covers ALL of that?

Bryan does this paddle suit my skill level you think?

Hi Eliana - please be sure to sign up since I'm posting this Meetup on 2 sites. We should have another full group. Glad you will join us.
