Do you ever find yourself bursting into song at odd moments like some character in a Broadway musical? In the shower, in the car, in the middle of Walmart? Do you wish you had some other outlet for that musical joy that didn't involve your roommates/significant other/strangers in Walmart asking you to PLEASE be quiet? Austin Casual Acappella (ACA) aims to provide a space where you are able...nay, encouraged...to sing out loud to your heart's content.
ACA is not a choir. We are not affiliated with any school, church or other institutional body. We are honestly just a group of 20- and 30-somethings who like to get together and sing together in harmony (or at least something closely resembling harmony). You don't have to be a great singer to join. You just have to be fun to sing with. And don't be worried about the acappella part - we have a piano to help out. We don't usually perform in public - so don't let your stage fright stop you from checking us out. The one exception is that we do have an annual tradition of singing Christmas carols under the Zilker Tree during the Trail of Lights.
Singing sessions are typically held on the first and third Sundays of the month at 7 pm. No audition or commitments are required. If you have songs that you love and have sheet music for, we encourage you to bring it with you. We know a lot of choir-y music comes from religious traditions, but we try to stay away from strongly religious music to keep the group welcoming to people of all backgrounds. Note that stuff like old-school gospel and folk is fine. Here's a sample of things we've sung or are currently singing - we like it eclectic:
Loch Lomond (Scottish folk song)
Somewhere in My Memory from Home Alone (part of our Christmas caroling medley)
E Ala E (a Hawai'ian chant)
You Are the New Day (King's Singers)
Skye Boat Song from Outlander
Goodnight my Angel (Billy Joel)
Glory Bound (Wailin' Jennys)
Annchen von Tharau (an old German song, to mix it up bit)
Sisi Ni Afrika (a new-ish Swahili song, to mix it up even more)
Morning has Broken (Cat Stevens)
We hope you check out our group and come sing with us. We look forward to meeting and harmonizing with you!
