Magic: the Gathering @ South Austin Game Night

At the SXSW Game Expo, WotC had dedicated gaming tables for Magic: the Gathering, and the massive wave of nostalgia nearly knocked passersby on their backsides. Since then, rounding up a game or two sounded like a fun excuse to break out those long-boxed cards.

If we've got enough interest in the group, I'd like to meet up for a few games during the South Austin Game Night at Rockin' Tomato on South Lamar. The SAGN runs every Tuesday and Sunday; I've put our meetup a week from Sunday. SAGN has their own Meetup, by the way, but I just thought it would be a good setting for some Magic games and might give us more people to meet and games to try should our M:tG skills not be as fierce as we remember them. :)

Date is set for Sunday, April 7th @2:00pm; if you have date conflicts but would like to participate, let me know!

So I brushed up on the state-of-the-game these days, and of course there's a lot more game variants than there used to be. For the sake of anyone dusting off their collection after a long idle time (like me! I stopped playing around 5th edition...) we'll play with the classic rules, i.e. 60+ card decks, no more than 4 or any card, 20 health to start, etc.

If we have more than 2 players, I'd like to set up a multiplayer game. It'll help if we have an odd number of players, and I always felt they let everyone play through their deck long enough to at least deploy part of any strategy they had. 1-on-1 is fine, but can be over in a flash if your draws are iffy to start!

So that's the bare minimum to get us going. I'll MAY be a few minutes after 2 when I get to Rocking Tomato, but shouldn't be by much! Will update when on my way. See you there!

FYI, if new players are interested, they could pair up and play with new MtG starter decks from the game shop. Or we can play multiplayer setup, with 3-4 people. Or come say hi, watch a little, and try another game someone brought to the South Austin Game Night! Some options, if you're on the fence! :-D

I'm thinking about coming out. I think MtG is cool except all the money that people have to spend on cards just to play - that kind of takes away from the fun of the game and unbalances it.

Agree, wasn't big on pay-to-win as a kid, don't much like microtransactions now. But! It's still a fun game with lots of twiddly powers to mix and match. :-)

lol I know, my main deck cost me like 100$ to make and I couldn't even use it in tournaments because like half of my deck went out of rotation a week after I finished it!

Yeah, I have no idea if my decks are legal. None were originally overpowered, but it's been so many years since I bought any, who knows. ;-)

I'm thinking this isn't for beginners and you will need your own decks to play.

It should be all skills levels I think, I can bring some cards so ppl can build some decks ... If they don't have cards to play

Certainly up to you, Mary, but I was never much of a collector, so my decks are usually built from various cards from random packs. I liked coming up with the concepts more than competition or tournaments!

I'll add that while my card collection is far from extensive, I have at least 2 terribly-constructed decks available, should anyone be interested enough to try playing but not have cards of their own. :)

I have a ton of cards, that I lend to people to put together like 3 decks, besides that I have my legacy deck which I am dying to try out!!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
