February Geek Social - Let's talk LAN!

Thanks to Jessica Lee for suggesting this. She said:

"Since so many of us didn't make it to the Start the New Year social, maybe we could have another social meetup soon? Or I don't know how many of you are into old-school Halo: Combat Evolved or Lan-Parties, but maybe we could do a video game night sometime? Sorry if I'm suggesting too much I know I'm a noob to this group. Looking forward to going to some events soon! :-)"

So, let's get together on the first Wednesday of February.  Among other things, I'd love to hear what kind of LAN gaming and/or other electronic gaming we would like to organize as a group.  And as usual, it's a great chance for the new geeks to meet the vets. See you at Mozart's!

I've never played a computer video game in my life. I'd heard of LAN parties, but never knew exactly what they were up until now. How does this work? A bunch of people with computers basically alone in a group? Does that count as socializing? Is everyone on "teamspeak" or something? What if you don't have a video-game laden laptop to bring along? Does that make one the odd man out?

    February 6, 2013

    • Jacob

It seems like it's also increasingly rare to have games fully support local LAN or split-screen gaming. But even if it's not as "social" as, say, happy hour, it's nice to get pals in the same room once in a while, rather than separated by the Internet...

      February 6, 2013

    • Jacob

I'd also counter the "alone in a group" comment. It's just an activity to get people together. Hardly much different than watching football or playing poker. It requires more equipment, but that doesn't bother the geeky!

Hey! Just joined and am flirting with the idea of comming tonight, but a question...

    2 · February 6, 2013

    • Johann

Most of our meetings are surprisingly well balanced gender wise, and many have had significantly more women than men. I hope to see you there tonight.

      1 · February 6, 2013

    • Jacob

Don't know if it helps your decision, Andrea, but we're just deciding who's up for playing video games together! I consider it a pretty gender-neutral activity... I think the only prereq is being friendly, right?

      February 6, 2013

  • Johann

Looking forward to seeing y'all tonight. Look for a meetup sign on the table. Also, I want to find somebody willing to be an official Event Organizer for our LAN / video gaming events. Might that be you? Let's talk tonight!

    2 · February 6, 2013

Willing to assist in some capacity! :)

      1 · February 6, 2013

Looking forward to seeing y'all on Wednesday night. If the weather is good, I'll grab some of the picnic tables out on the deck for us. Otherwise, I'll get tables in the covered area at the back of Mozart's. And just to be clear - this event is to be social and TALK about scheduling some LAN gaming. Don't bring any game consoles this time. Mozart's is not equipped for such. See y'all then!

Aargh, my friend's non profit is having an event this same night!! Hope we can get another meetup going-I love everything I see/hear- Nintendo, GOW3, Halo, Resistance 2...sigh. Of course, her events ends at 8, I may be able to sneak in for the last hour :)

    1 · February 3, 2013

    • Jessica L.

I hope you can too! I know I'll be making it to the LAN party for sure, but I've been having attack of allergies lately and might lay low that night myself... I'll play it by ear (infection) ha. Looking forward to meeting you all though, I'm new to Meetup and this group. :)

Hi everyone! well i'm new to Austin and i would like to meet new people. This Lan party sounds awesome and id love to be attend. Honestly, i'm more into PC gaming (i only have my laptop here) but i do like to play Xbox/console games every now and then.

    February 2, 2013

  • Jessica L.

Jacob & others: I have Gears of War 3 as well. I liked the first two games a lot and haven't really even started to play GOW 3 yet, been busy with my other systems lol. But I'll definitely bring it on the LAN night too if people want to play.

    1 · January 30, 2013

  • Jacob

Lot of options! Maybe we should consider more than one event, i.e. one with a retro theme for the N64 lovers, and another for current systems? Along those lines, are most folks more interested in a console party, vs. the more old-school PC LAN party?

While I'm up for both, I just do more gaming in PC these days, so I'll keep an open door policy on any folks who want to put something together on that front.

(If it helps, I did buy Gears of War 3 the other day. Not my style generally, but it's my brother-in-law was psyched. I wanted something with a coop campaign to throw in when he visits. Lots of good multi modes on that one, and copies are in the $10-15 range right now.)

Sounds like a great first event to go to. Looking forward to it.

Oh, so I just bought a great N64 console this weekend...it has 4 controllers. Or better put, I have 2 N64 consoles now (it was a bundled deal) with 1 game of 007 Golden Eye, total of 4 controllers, 2 power supplies, and 1 perfectly functioning Nintendo Composite video/audio out. All we'd need is someone to bring another A/V cable and 4 more controllers, OR just a few games and 4 of us can game on the N64. Just wanted to throw that out in case I forgot to mention it at Mozart's.

    1 · January 28, 2013

    • Drandith

Nice! Apparently the only thing I lost in my move were my N64 controllers. How cruel life can be sometimes.... =P Although, that being said I have been playing more Smash Bros and Mario Kart on Wii now.

      1 · January 28, 2013

  • Jessica L.

    Awesome! Anything I can bring?
These are the things I have I could offer to bring:
-An old Gameboy pocket with a connector cable & Mortal Kombat 4
-PS2 with one controller, no games, 1 PS2 memory card, 1 PS1 memory card
-Xbox 360 with Halo: Combat Evolved (original Bungie version), 1 controller, and Halo 4, Silver, but no Gold membership
    -PS3 with 2 controllers, Resistance 2
-PSP-3000 with Justice League game, not certain if you can wifi co-op?

    Anyone have suggestions/opinions?

    January 23, 2013

    • Johann

No need to bring anything to Mozart's. It's a nice quiet environment for friendly chats, but not really for setting up gaming. I was just intending to get together there to socialize and discuss the what/where/when would be good for LAN gaming.

LOL, last social event was to be my first visit there. See you guys there.

Hey everyone! New to Austin and looking to play some vids / LAN. I'll definitely be at this event but if you're bored in the mean time, msg me on Facebook. Facebook.com/Ra.wannaparty I have a ton of games and consoles that need some attention. Hit me up. =)

    January 27, 2013

  • Drandith

I'm super new to Austin and this sounds like a delicious idea. I have tons of games that need some attention plus LANing is my faves. Letz doo eet!

    January 27, 2013

  • Jacob

I can probably do Mozart's! By the way, great coffee shop, free Wi-Fi, and it's always packed with laptops, but I wouldn't try heavy-duty gaming on-site. Better for writing outside while the sun sets. :)

As for LAN brainstorming, I've got an XBox 360 and a gaming laptop, plus a spare router and cables for some networking. The last LAN I had ran mostly on Wi-Fi, but I'm a purist and lke to use cables when I can. :)

I don't stock a lot of multiplayer titles, but we've got some options. I'm sure we'll talk more over coffee. Some titles are cheap enough we could pick up a couple for XBox, I've still got a couple gift copies of Borderlands on Steam, plus BL2 for XBox is at the Redbox right now. It's a good local multiplayer option.

Plus I think I mentioned it before, but Rock Band's not totally out of style yet, right? And even if it is, who cares? It's a blast with a group.

Chat back if you have more ideas in the meantime; hope to see some folks in a couple weeks!

Would Mozart's support a LAN party?

    January 21, 2013

  • Jessica L.

Mozart's sounds good. Not to make a cliche geek statement, but I don't get out much, and I'm not totally aware of where would be a good meet up. I'm enthused to go to my first event with your group.

I love LAN parties, they're a bit old fashioned now but are still a ton of fun and a great way for geeks to feel comfortable but social.

Great that we have interest from four people already. Would you guys like to do another social at Mozart's, or does somebody have specific ideas for an alternative? Let me know and I'll announce it!

    Hi Jessica and all!

Sounds like a great idea. I have started a discussion about this on the discussion board. I'd love to get some more specific ideas so we can schedule something. Please share your thoughts so we can get some events on the schedule. Thanks!
