***PLEASE NOTE: For this (and possibly future) toy making workshop(s), I thought it would be a good idea to help Dot Rambin to make toys for the birds who have PDD at the Schobot Center's PDD Research Lab at Texas A&M. These birds need enrichment and entertainment as much as any birds, and if it wasn't for wonderful, loving, committed people like Dot, who volunteer their time and money to make send toys to these birds, their lives wouldn't be nearly as enriched. The staff at the Schubot Center do a wonderful job, but their time and resources are stretched thin, so they rely on the help of others to provide toys for these birds. Please join us for this toy making workshop, and donate some or all of the toys you make to the Schubot Center. When the workshop is over, we will ship the toys to them.
Even if you can't make it out to this workshop, you can still help out by sending photos of your birds to Dot and place an order with her to make cards, mugs, t-shirts, or whatever else, at Cafepress with your bird's photos. All proceeds from her Cafepress site go to buying toy supplies and shipping her home-made toys to the Schubot Center. Thanks for reading!***
This workshop will be split up into two sections:
Bird Ownership Class: 9 am - 1 pm
In this class we will discuss a variety of issues about caring for and living with birds, including but not limited to: caging, toys and foraging, nutrition, health, first aid, behavior, lighting, bathing, and more. We will have ten minute breaks throughout the class, and then will break for lunch at 1 pm.
It is highly recommended but not required that you print out and bring a copy of the Bird Owner's Manual with you to the class, as it will help you to follow along, and contains some additional information and resources. You can download the Manual here: http://www.meetup.com/AustinParrotSociety/files/ Scroll down to the bottom of the page; it's the last file.
LUNCH 1 pm - 2 pm (Potluck)
Toy Making Workshop: 2 pm - 5 pm
Our most popular workshop! Come join us for a bunch of great fun, lots of creative ideas, and lots of toy making for our birds!
Here is a list of some ideas of what to bring to make toys with:
* coffee filters
* wax-free paper cups (emphasis on wax-free!)
* finger traps
* tamale wrappers
* tissue paper, napkins, cardboard, brown packaging paper, etc.
* syringe cases (you can get these for free from your vet, as they are usually thrown away
* bird-safe beads, plastic or wood, as long as they are too big to swallow
* leather strips and scraps
* blocks or scraps of untreated wood
* heavy duty sewing needles
* hole puncher
* marine-grade stainless steel nuts, bolts, screws, washers, chains, bells, etc.
* toilet paper / paper towel rolls
* popsicle sticks
* to-go boxes and coffee/drink holders that are made out of undyed, recycled paper (examples of places that use these products: Starbucks, Mother's, Hyde Park Grill).
NO STYROFOAM OR DYED PAPERS, PLEASE!
If you can think of any other suitable, bird-safe items, feel free to bring them along as well!
And if you have any questions, you can reply to this post or email Tracey or Emily! Any tools you can bring would be appreciated too. Drills, scissors, etc.
We look forward to seeing you all there!
Please check this meetup for any detail changes that may occur.
