Day Sailing: Monday on Lake Travis; Everyone Drives!

  • Oct 7, 2013 · 4:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Sailing Plan: You steer the boat as we sail across the wind, taking turns on the tiller, learning to steer, tacking as needed. Then we will head upwind around Starnes Island and West toward the old Carlos & Charlies Restaurant. After one hour upwind, we will return, finally dropping sails and motoring safely to our harbor dock.

Allow for traffic. We leave the dock 15 minutes after Meetup time.

Bathroom Break: Take one before this two hour cruise. A good place is our bath house under the Clubhouse, beyond the metal steps.

What to Bring: Camera, sun protection, sunglasses, sneakers, drinks, snack. Swimsuit for pool or lake.

Office Staff: Please do not bother them.

Directions to Austin Yacht Club: Find Ranch Road 620; go south to the dam and one mile beyond to the traffic light at Hudson Bend Road. Turn right on Hudson Bend & go ONE mile only!(small grocery store on right) Turn right on Beacon Drive & go one mile and thru the AYC gate.

At the clubhouse parking lot, turn right toward the water. (park by the playground if you need the bathroom) then drive down to the 2nd ramp on the left, near the blue wind sock. Drive down around to the water's edge. Park & Lock. Find the far Left Dock.

We are at the LEFT DOCK, 4th boat on the left (green sail cover)

Very light winds SSE 2-3. Paul, Debra, and Joann did well steering the boat and finding the wind. The boat moved slowly and we practiced basic tacking turns, and finding the wind. On the downwind we deployed the whisker pole but soon had to remove it because of a hard right shift. We hope for better wind next time.
