Texas cruisers forum meet up planning, and Decker Sail

The cruisers forum is having a meetup Memorial day weekend somewhere on the Texas coast, either Port Aransas or Galveston. I need one or two crew to participate. We'll meet and talk about who wants to go, how we'll get there, what we'll bring.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f61/texas-cruisers-forum-meetup-117759.html

We will have a meeting on the dock, and afterwards go sailing.

well, at least we won't be sailing night and day! I've heard that's often required crossing the gulf. And night sailing can get pretty dicey with the oil rigs and boat traffic

Maybe on our trip you will meet someone who can clue you in to the Harvest Moon Regatta, where you can enjoy this experience.

For those of you who RSVP'd and didn't show, your loss!!! We had FABULOUS weather and winds and GREAT sailing!!! We have semi-finalized plans for the Memorial weekend trip, and Tom said we'll hold one more organizational meeting before the event to finalize details. So, if you RSVP'd and still want to go, stay tuned!

I will be bringing my Hobie Cat today. Looks like good sailing weather this afternoon at Decker Lake.

San Luis Pass to the Dike will take 10 hours or more. If we actually get the mast up right at sun rise, we may make it before sunset 13 hours later.

Offats to the Dike, leaves a lot of time for swimming, chatting and imbibing, that trip should take no more than 5 hours

The Dike to Kemah should take around five hours.

This all assumes fair winds, from the south-south east.

I'm pretty open, but was wondering about the logistics of ending at Clear Lake and how to get back. When were you planning to drive your truck over? I may be able to drive over and bring you back.

Here is one plan, I'm open to others. I have family in Texas City so this would be the easiest for me to implement:
    Memorial Day Cruise

Plan 1. Drive down Friday, Launch into Offats Bayou, Have dinner somewhere in Galveston, Sleep on the boat, Set Sail early morning, Sail to Texas City Dike, Anchor out, swim in have Dinner in Texas City,
Sleep on Boat, Sunday Set sail early, sail to Clear Lake, go shopping, have dinner somewhere there abouts, sleep on boat. Haul Boat Monday morning, drive home.

Since The daytime winds are usually from the Sea unless there is a norther, this will be mostly down wind.

?? What's "mal-de-mer" I used to love taking the ferry over to Bolivar and drive to Chrystal Beach - so sad it's all gone - was a great restaurant there.

Looks like there might be two boats joining us if we do the Offats, Dike, Clear Lake thing. Might be more fun. Two of them are berthed in Clear Lake, which would give ya'll a chnace to talk more with folks who've sailed in the Gulf. Anyways, ya'll have any ideas as to what to do in the evenings?

    Here's mine:
Any ideas as to what activities to do at each spot.

    I'm thinking

    1. Offats Bayou, Launch, park the trailer in Clear Lake, have a group dinner a Gaido's or someplace.

    2. Texas City, Raft up chat, drink adult beverages, sing pirate ditties.

    3. Clear Lake: stop at the Kemah Boardwalk, shop and dine at the Aquarium.

    4. Monday Haul out, and have brunch somewhere, go home

Yes, a second vehicle would be helpful. Concerns are where to put it while we are underway, so it will be secure.

I'm definitely interested, but have work obligations on the 26th. If you end up having space/if there is another time you might be free, I'd love to meet and discuss! I've only been sailing once before, but am interested in marine education professionally. Am trying to learn as much as I can before I start job hunting!

Come on out to Austin Yacht Club - we'll get you on a boat

There hasn't been a lot of activity on cruisers world on this. I poke them on Monday before, see what they say, are there any others with trailerables who'd like to go, as an Austin contingent?

I have room at the moment, but for only three.

There is a Regatta that weekend. A two-day, FYI.

      April 1

    • Melanie ".

I don't do the regattas unless I'm crewing for someone else:-) So, I'd rather get some open water sailing in!

      April 2

  • Shannon B.

Darn. I'm free for the planning meeting, but Memorial Day weekend got gobbled up by the two-day Regatta. Really want to sail on the bay though….
