MLK Colorado River Wildlife Refuge Clean Up

Let's do something good besides drinking! haha Well maybe we can go drink after...TBD

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a day that all Americans are encouraged to give back to their community.

While the actual day falls on a Monday, many people will be working, so we will be celebrating MLK Day by giving service on Saturday, January 19, 2013. From 9am – 12:30pm.

Camp Fire is hosting an event at the Colorado River Wildlife Refuge where we will dive into over 20 acres of land and clean up the area, spread seeds and test for water amongst many other awesome activities.

Camp Fire has been around nationally for over a century, and locally in Austin for over 50 years. This event is free and open to the public and people of ALL ages. Austin’s bodies of water and surrounding land are precious to our community, and I hope that some people will be interested in contributing to keeping them safe and healthy to all of us who use these resources.

Notes:

Wear comfortable shoes, clothes you don't mind getting dirty, bring gloves if you can.

Hey! Does this involve lifting heavy objects? I have an arm injury that prevents me from doing majorly heavy lifting, but I still want to help out!

I can only stay for about an hour and a half....is that okay or do you want me to give my space up to someone who can be there the entire time?

Additional Details: · Wear closed-toed shoes, long pants and long sleeves. · Bring a refillable water bottle. We will have water, Gatorade, and light snacks available. *Please note that there is some poison ivy at certain parts of the site, which is why wearing long sleeves and long pants is strongly suggested.

Adequate parking is available under the Montopolis bridge: take Levander Loop, veer off to the right head towards the river and you will see a large parking lot. Please note that if you have gone over the bridge, you have gone too far! After parking, if you are not a Camp Fire member, you will need to sign our waiver and release for this event (if you are a member, we already have this information). You will see a Camp Fire staff member in the parking lot with these forms handy. After signing the form, you will be directed to a variety of project offerings. You can work on the given project for however long you feel comfortable. At around noon, we will have a gathering to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. and celebrate the day and all who participated.
