January 30th *South* Weeknight Discussion Meetup

Our new schedule has us meeting four times a month, twice each in North Austin and South Austin. Wednesdays will be at Write by Night. Meetings last 2.5-3 hours.

We'll start the meeting off by reading works  (silently) from those that have brought something to share then we'll take turns discussing them. If you want to bring a piece to share please bring at least 4-5 copies and keep it between 2-4 pages in length (2,000 words max). From there if time allows we will branch into a discussion of topics related to writing.

About the meeting fee, Meetup charges organizers a fee to run the group. So, the suggested donation is to help me cover the costs of running the group. Anything you can donate helps but we won't kick you out if you can't spare a few bucks.

**Special Note** for this meeting we will be at our South meetup location, WriteByNight. The WriteByNight folks have generously offered to let us use their office space for our meetings. They will have coffee & maybe a few snacks on hand but if you want something special be sure to bring it as this won't be our usual coffee shop environment. Hopefully the trade off to gain privacy & quiet will be worth it. The also have open writing hours here from 4PM-8PM so feel free to stop by early if you need a quiet place to work. For more info check out their website www.writebynight.net & meetup group http://www.meetup.com/WriteByNight-Write-better-Right-now/

The meeting, my sixth, was excellent. I am receving great feedback, and am gradually learning how to provided feedback to others.

Good advice Renae. John, I think it was a general comment not specific to any one person because we're all guilty of getting defensive sometimes. It's always a tricky line, some writing goups don't allow for the author to speak at all, I don't subscribe to that theory. I think it's okay to ask & answer questions to a certain extent. I do think people need to be careful about getting defensive because it's your work, you don't have to defend it, but the line between explaining and defending sometimes gets blurred. Sometimes someone is just trying to explain what they were trying to do to see if that was achieved.

It is excellent advice, of course.

Please don't forget to change your RSVP to a no if you can no longer attend tonight. That goes for the wait listers too as you will automatically get bumped up to a yes in the order you signed up if a spot opens up.
