Watch out, world – here at Fountain House, we’re taking our commitment to wellness to the streets with our first-ever “1 in 4” 5K race, and I’m hoping you’ll be part of it!
My name is Joe. I’m the leader of our Wellness Program here at Fountain House, and I want you to lace up and join us on April 12, 2014 in Riverside Park.
We’ve never taken on anything like this before, so we really need your help to turn this fun run into a great event. Please come spend the morning with us – running, walking, skating, pogo sticking – however you’d like to cover the beautiful 5K course.
You may be asking, “What does 1 in 4 5K mean?” Every year, one in four Americans experiences a mental illness. Even though these health challenges are relatively common, they are still surrounded by silence and stigma. With your participation, we can raise awareness of mental health issues and encourage the Fountain House community on the path to mental - and physical - health.
Last year, you heard about the innovative work we’re doing to reverse the terrible trend of early death among people living with serious mental illness.
Physical activity is an important part of our Wellness Program, and we’ve worked hard to get people moving, regardless of their fitness level. Our on-site gym, fitness classes, Fountain House-sponsored community gym memberships, and fun House-wide competitions, like The Biggest Loser 1,000 Pound Challenge are all ways we’ve engaged members to incorporate exercise into their lifestyles. The 1 in 4 5K is the next big step for us.
Register here or donate to support the Fountain House 1 in 4 5K.
Follow our progress as we get ready for the big event on Facebook or Instagram.
See you on the starting line on April 12!
All the best,
Joe Shaffer, LMSW
