The goal of this group is to investigate into the nature of life - to spend some regular time together studying and discussing the texts of the classical tradition of this ancient medical science, or more properly science of life, which takes into consideration all aspects of life - body mind, sense organs and soul.
Through this we will learn together the beneficial and harmful effects of foods, lifestyle and exercise, and our body/mind type though a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda, much more than simply VATA/PITTA and KAPHA.
Each time we meet will will send some time reading some texts before discussing what we have read and any other thoughts that come to us, along with some light refreshments! We may spend some time trying out some agreed techniques, such as yoga/ meditation/ detox programmes or even makin up herbal preparations or whatever takes the groups fancy.
Ayurveda originates in ancient Indian philosophy, particularly Vedanta, Sankhya and Yoga and other philosophies which hold that human consciousness is a reflection of the universal consciousness or the human being is the microcosm of the universal macrocosm. As such Ayurveda has existed since time immemorial. It argues that all sickness and illness arises because we make the mistake of identifying ourselves with the changing states of the physical body and loose our connectiveness with the wholistic aspect of ourselves. This can be regained through practical aspects of Yoga, such as meditation and yoga postures (which affects our body and emotions) and through nature and proper use of herbs and minerals to reset the physical balance of our body (which also affects our emotions and mind).
There will be a multitude of other discoveries to be made from studying initially the classical texts, Charaka, Sushurta and Astanga Hrydaya but numerous other books investigated together. Where this will all lead? This will be up to the group dynamics.
The Sanskrit language may also be investigated, the most ancient language on the planet, mathematically precise and the only language which contains no other language in it, but which is the source of EVERY other language or so it is said.
"Homage be to the First Physician who eliminated the entire diseases such as 'raga' (attachment), which ever shadows life, which are integral part of living beings and which are causes for 'autsukya' (anxiety), 'moha' (confusion) and 'arati' (restlessness)."
"May your life measure a hundred years,
May your sense organs be healthy for a hundred years,
and may the purusha (spirit) remain in your life and sense organs."
