>>GROUP IS CURRENTLY CLOSED TO NEW MEMBERS<< (With no plans to open any time soon, sorry!)
This is a group for writers of speculative fiction, a broad term that includes genres such as science fiction, fantasy, horror, steampunk, and magical realism. Speculative fiction includes such classics as Herbert's Dune and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series, beloved youth favorites such as C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia and J.K Rowling's Harry Potter books, and even contemporary mainstream works, such as Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaiden's Tale.
Our group meets regularly to critique original writing projects (novels, novellas, short stories, etc- no fan fiction, please). We don't focus on writing exercises; rather, we share already written projects (or portions of projects in the case of longer works) for reading in advance, and then critique them at our meetings.
At each meeting we critique approximately two pieces, depending on length and availability, and pieces are available in advance for download via our Files section. Part of our time may also include discussing craft, techniques for improvement, and preparing works for future publication.
We have also added regular informal writing nights, where members get together to just work, work, work on whatever ongoing projects they might have. And we schedule occasional meet ups for author appearances or conventions, social nights, and hold informal (fun!) writing competitions.
This group is open to writers with experience from amateur to published, but we're looking members who are serious about writing, submitting, and meeting regularly, as well as having a basic handle on the craft itself. To ensure this, we ask that everyone interested in joining please email a writing sample (for example, a short story or first novel chapter, preferably in your preferred genre) to the Group Organizer. Once you request to join, the GO will respond to you with information about where to submit this. (In addition, members who join up but don't visit the site for over three months and/or don't attend any meetings are removed in the interest of keeping our numbers reflective of active members.)
If you are a dedicated spec-fic writer who is looking for a writing group that will motivate you to keep working on a project, as well as providing useful critique, this is the group for you! We've been meeting regularly now for over three years, and are looking forward to many more!
To best benefit our writers, we keep our numbers low and limited to regular participants. All new members will be subject to a "trial membership" and asked to attend a couple of meetings before joining permanently. This is in no way meant to be exclusionary; we are simply looking for members who are good fits for the current (awesome!) group dynamic.
Please make sure to fill out your profile in it's entirety when requesting to join. If it sounds like you'd be a good fit, an Organizer will contact you with instructions on where to send a sample.
