BAASICS (Bay Area Art & Science Interdisciplinary Sessions) Message Board › "Second Genesis" - The Search For Life Beyond Earth In Our Solar S

BAASIC members may be interested in the following event at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 1st, sponsored by the Contra Costa Atheists and Freethinkers:
While religions have creation myths, scientists are actually teasing out the facts behind the origin of life on Earth, the only place we currently know where life exists. But what about elsewhere in the universe? Well, scientists are working on that question, too!
Come join the Contra Costa Atheists and Freethinkers for a friendly and stimulating presentation by Dr Chris McKay about the possibilities for alien life right in our own backyard. A "second genesis" in our solar system would likely involve only microbial-style life rather than Hollywood-style extraterrestrials. But actually finding another, independently-evolved form of life would help us to understand the "first" genesis on Earth. In the meantime, scientists are refining the basic conditions that are thought to be required for life. Recent discoveries suggest that these conditions may be found on or in the moons of planets in our solar system!
A lively Q&A is sure to follow.
Christopher P. McKay is a planetary scientist at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, studying planetary atmospheres, astrobiology, and terraforming. McKay received his PhD in astrogeophysics from the University of Colorado in 1982. His research focuses on the evolution of the Solar System and the origin of life. He is also actively involved in planning for future Mars missions, including human exploration. He has been involved with polar and desert research, traveling to the Antarctic Dry Valleys, the Atacama Desert, the Arctic, and the Namib Desert to conduct research in these Mars-like environments.
