Blog for a Following: Mini-Workshop

MINI-WORKSHOP: BLOG FOR A FOLLOWING

with Suzanna Stinnett

This workshop is for bloggers looking for a better system, and for authors who blog to support their published content. Whether you have a brand new blog or are reviving your plan after "blogger's block," building your author platform or publishing straight from your blogs, you need a system that your readers will love.

Blogging is publishing! As a matter of fact, we have blogging to thank for opening the doors to this new era of independent publishing of all sorts of content. In tonight's mini-workshop, we will:

  • Examine our blog titles and post titles for important branding elements.
  • Learn best practices for commenting on other blogs to build relationships.
  • Explore the most common blogging platforms and tools for ease and comfort.
  • Start an editorial calendar to trigger consistent blog posting.
  • Get the secret sauce recipe used by long-term bloggers with large followings.

Everyone will leave with lots of problems solved, and a plan for what's next, so class size is limited.

Lately, people seem to be pushing the idea of paid blog hosting rather than free wordpress, etc. Does it really make that much difference?

Wordpress is actually the software you load, and it continues to be free from wordpress.org. (Wordpress.com is where you use their site for free.) I do think it is worth paying the small fee for a blog host, owning your own domain at a small yearly fee, and enjoying that extra measure of control over the future of your content. If you are experimenting, use the free ones. When you decide to really build something, own your domain, pay for hosting, and use the Wordpress software. My two cents.

I agree with Suzanna. Nothing is FREE. If it's free YOU are the product.

I set up my blogs in April 2012 and never got going. Need to learn everything about formatting and sep etc. Is there a good series of online wordpress tutorials I should watch before class? I am hosted by GoDaddy for blogs and websites. But warning: For 7-8 months I can't use my GODaddy hosted email because of 2-20 hour delays in communication between Mail and Go Daddy's web. So all deleted mail keeps popping back up and deliveries are delayed. GoDaddy FINALLY confessed to being the problem and to not knowing when they could solve it. So I am looking for someone to take my mail off Godaddy and transfer it to gmail. Otherwise, GODaddy has been very helpful.

Thanks, Suzanna, for the blog hosting comment. I think you've convinced me to plunk down some money.

I don't know how I do it, but I always have something else scheduled on the nights you have these great events. Not only is this on my birthday, but I'll be in Hawaii lounging on the beach! So don't feel too sorry for me, but will you be doing it again? Or recording it?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
