22nd March - A day hike in the Shropshire Hills

  • March 22, 2014 · 10:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

For all Birmingham Backabushers, an invitation to an early Springtime hike in some of Shropshire's best hill country.

The hike is a fairly strenuous 10-12 miles (depending on weather conditions) with about 600m of ascent.  We will use paths, tracks and country lanes on a circular route that takes in Ratlinghope, Stiperstones Ridge (above) and Linley hill. Fabulous Shropshire views throughout, and interesting things to look at.

We meet at 10.30am at Bridges pub car park  SY5 0ST.
It is about 90 minutes from Birmingham.  We should finish around 4.00pm.  If your Satnav takes you via Church Stretton this takes you up a very steep narrow road which is bad in icy weather.  To avoid this take the A5 to Shrewsbury and then join the B4380 (old Shrewsbury bypass) then take the Longden Road.  You may use the message board for this event to arrange any car sharing

This is a day hike
but there is nothing to stop you booking into nearby Bridges YHA and making it a weekend.

YHA members' rates should apply - ask Marshall  for the number.

You will need all your outdoor gear including warm layers, waterproofs and strong waterproof footwear to cope with rocky and muddy areas.  Gaiters are recommended after wet periods.  Also bring a pack lunch and drinks.  The pub will be at the finishing point.

There is no fee for this hike, so please keep your RSVP up to date.  If you need any more information please contact Marshall at

It does not look like anyone is able to give me a lift from Birmingham. I am planning to get the train to Shrewsbury station, is there anyone that can give me a lift from here to the bridges pub car park? I am new to the group and have never been to Shrewsbury before.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks Marshall and Geoff for your good responses to Sushma and Gavin's questions. Given the large membership of the group and the high demand for day hikes like this, perhaps a solution in the future would be to schedule 2 start times for two different groups, one at 9 and one at 10 or 11 for example. This would allow groups to remain small but also give more people a chance to participate in great hikes with great people!

We would be delighted to have more volunteer hike leaders to help with the group. If anyone has the necessary skills (like first aid and navigation training) we would love to have them get involved. Please just e-mail me directly and we can discuss possibilities. :-)

    Hi Folks
See Christine's note below. If anyone is coming by train I can collect up to 4 people from Shrewsbury station, if you can get there by 9.30am. I can drop you off there early evening but can't guarantee exactly what time. Please let me know if you need a lift.

    Hi All
This is in response to a question about why I have put a limit on numbers. Keeping the group to around 20 people means we can aim to stay as one group, not spend too much time crossing stiles and other obstacles, minimise potential safety issues and hopefully maximise the enjoyment of the scenery and the various items of interest along the route. I will contact you again later in the week with a bit more advice and the latest weather forecast.
    Cheers

Hi Kerry I am right by you only prob is I will be driving back to Tamworth after only though, if that helps? I only have 2 sweater

  • Gavin S.

can anyone please..with respect..please say why there is a limit on this "social walk-gathering"!???? Could there not be two groups..that swap for the return journey!????

    March 17, 2014

Hi Gavin - it is important to remember that Marshall is kindly organising this walk on a voluntary basis and the walk needs to be as enjoyable for him as for all participants. Having 50+ hikers on one hike can spoil the fun and would raise safety concerns. The Shropshire Hills can offer some challenging terrain for hillwalkers and safety will always be our priority in this group. Thanks for understanding. :-)

      March 19, 2014

  • Sushma

Marshall, thanks for reply. I'm still not sure why the limit; I regularly hike & we often have 50+ on similar ones. It would help others/new-comers to understand why you have put a limit>communication is always appreciated & will make people more likely to join other events in future. Cheers

    Hi Folks

For new members I need to explain about the waitlist for this Hike. The hike is now full with 20 people which is a large group for a hike of this type. I you want to go you should join the waitlist. If anyone drops out, Meetup will automatically offer the space to the person at the top of the waitlist (date order). To those who already have a space and you can no longer attend, PLEASE change your RSVP to 'not going' so that your space can be offered to someone else.
    Cheers,
    Marshall

Hi all, I am new to the group and would love to come but am unfortunately carless, does anyone still have a space for me?!

    March 16, 2014

    • Marshall

Hi Aaron, thanks for joining Backabush Birmingham. This hike is full at the moment but you may join the waitlist by RSVPing. If anyone drops out the space will be automatically re-offered to the person at the top of the waitlist. It's quite a long waitlist, but I hope to meet you on a hike sometime.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
