Glacier national park anyone? It's that time again!

Its National park time!

*PLEASE READ ENTIRE WRITE UP BEFORE SIGNING UP*

Starting this out with Glacier national park.  Though this is the first one i'm posting it will probably not be the first one I go to.  But who knows.

This is way to far to drive to have any significant time there.  So I am flying Allegiant air out of mesa.  Current flight cost is $228 with one checked bag round trip into Missoula Mt. Arrival time for us in Missoula is 11:30 am on Sat July 27th.  Departure time is 11:00 am on Friday Aug 2.   As of today it looked like there were roughly 100 seats still available.  No idea on how long they will last.  So book as soon as you can.  Other carriers where offering trips from Tucson to Missoula for $475 ish.

I have 2 camp sites reserved at the Fish Creek campground.  Each able to hold 6 people.

I also have one mini van reserved through Enterprise that will take 6 of us.   That means the first 6 to sign up and get tickets will be riding with me.   The next 6 will have to book there own vehicle and work out who is renting it and driving.   The drive from Missoula to Glacier is roughly 3.5 hours.

What to expect.

- A lot of great scenery.

- A ton of hiking

- Hopefully a ton of Wildlife

- Average temperatures for this time of year.  Highs of mid 70's  Lows Mid 40's

- Average rain fall for this time of year is 1.18 inches per month.  Rain of .01 inches or more likely 9 days out of the month.

- This will be a car camp but remember you will be putting all of your gear on a plane.  We will be stopping up there to buy our regular food and such.

- Costs...  Your plane ticket.  (Mine was $228.)  Car rental depends on how many end up going.  Shared gas expenses and shared camping expenses.   We would also share costs of fire wood and things that we all use.  Like buying a cheap cooler once we get to Montana.  We can donate it to good will or something before we bug out.  So everyone can try and budget I would estimate between $100 - $150 each person.

What to think about.

Glacier has a high bear activity.  Though seldom do they have problems you must be aware that they could come into the campground or we could see them why out on trail.   I do have a can of bear spray I carry to help out the group.  If you feel you need one personally that is up to you of course.

There might be some trails we do where there is some exposure.   You will of course not have to continue if you do not wish and may turn back.  Also you are free to do different hikes as long as they don't take the main group to far out of there way to not allow them to finish the one the majority wanted to do.

How the wait list works...  The order in which you sign up will be the order of preference.  If the wait list should exceed the number of spots available.  Those that are ahead of others on the list will be given a 24 hour window of opportunity of saving there spot by purchasing there ticket before the folks behind them may advance.  Also those who have been a member of this group or who have hiked with me before this was posted will also get first dibs.  Though I will not put you on the going list until I have seen a copy of your purchased plane ticket.   If you have some other odd way of getting there then I will require a $100 deposit to hold your spot.  Your deposit will be used towards the cost of the rental car and camp fees.  Any left over would be returned to you.   If you end up canceling those of us that do go thank you for your support.

I will email out a suggested camping list etc as we get closer.

Please note that if you have any medical issues I would like you to write them down and keep them in an envelope in your pack. These are for emergency use only and could greatly help emergency responders in assisting you if it were needed. Information should contain Any allergies, Any medical history that might be beneficial to an emergency responder, Emergency contact number. (Either written in the envelope or in you phone as emergency contact.) If there is something that you believe your organizer should know prior to the event. (Ie you are allergic to bee stings, Etc) Please let the organizer know before the hike. Thank you all. Lets go have some fun!

Questions please email or call me[masked] As always hike at your own risk. See you on the trail!

Robert, just read your notes. I am still busy here, I am going for a conference in Chicago tomorrow and when I come back, I will get the keys to my new house in IN. All my household goods from Tucson are still in storage room.

Couldn't think of a better way to fulfill a bucket list trip. I found myself saying “OMG” in my head a lot :) GNP is no doubt a hiker's paradise. So grateful to hang out with this wonderful group of people and be surrounded by inspiring views of majestic peaks, forests, lakes, waterfalls, wildflowers & a variety of wildlife. And the unpredictable weather just made the trip much more interesting. Thank you everyone especially Paul for making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

An amazing once in a lifetime trip with some wonderful people. The landscapes were breathtaking. The wildlife were excellent when "on duty"...(but they should work longer hours :). Overall, the weather was cooperative. We were lucky to see a few glaciers...maybe for the last time at GNP. There were many beautiful photogenic waterfalls with cold crystal clear water (for Max to play in). Thank you Paul.

Staying at my daughter in Mesa ! See ya at the airport !

    1 · July 24, 2013

I bought a temp stove as mine you can no longer buy fuel for , or the fuel adapter , though l have fuel. But not flight proof ! So lm in.

    July 24, 2013

  • Paul

Also just a reminder. The plane leaves at 810am on Saturday the 27th. You will want to be checked in at least an hour before hand. Failure to do that will most likely leave you trying to find another way up there. As they won't have another plane going that way until wednesday i think. Oh and of course you would have to pay again. So lets not miss our flight. :-). This is the Mesa airport so make sure you go there. Thank you!

Quick question for everyone else. Does anyone else use usaa car insurance?

    July 8, 2013

    • Caroline L.

What is USAA? So USAA is top rated? Credit card insurance usually only cover the coalition and damage of the rental. Will the USAA credit card cover the third party liability also?

      July 9, 2013

    • Paul

No credit card only covers user as well. And insurance covers just those drivers.

      July 9, 2013

  • Barry

No but l have AARP ! HA !

    July 8, 2013

  • Barry

Good day , has anyone set up a rental veh at airport, other than Paul ? I just need a feel of how many folks want in .

      July 8, 2013

    • Carolyn

I think I need to be part of the second vehicle. I took over Bob's spot, but I don't know if that also gives me a spot in Paul's car or not. Let me know if I need to do anything.

Pre trip Meeting. OK all we will meet at old Chicago Pizza on Tuesday the 16th at 6:30 for our meeting. Please come if you can. I will go over some basics of what to expect. Show people where we will be camping etc. Then we can discuss our hiking ideas with the group. Nothing needs to be final at this time for the hikes. We could even deice that stuff the night before we go. So more of an idea session. See you all there.

    Paul

    July 1, 2013

  • Paul

Hi all, ok I was thinking of doing a pre meeting gathering to discuss the trip more. This would be to go over more details of what to bring and what kind of hiking we would like to do. How does July 16,17 or 18th work for you guys? I know it probably isn't possible to get everyone here for it. But we will just go with the day that the most folks can make it. We can meet at like old Chicago pizza on Campbell at say 6:30 on the day we decied.

    June 26, 2013

just a question will we be hiking in to the campsite or are we driving in setting up camp and hiking out from there?

    June 4, 2013

    • Paul

We will be driving to campsite. This is not a backpacking trip just a hiking trip with a car camp. We do however have to get all our gear on a plane so backpacking type of gear would be easier to hall. We will get a cooler or coolers when we are there and for those that can do out shopping up there.

Places I loved near there. Clarkfork River Trail #223 east of St Regis, NW of Missoula. Sweet MTB/hiking trail. 9 sweet miles along the rushing river in dark forest. Few know of this place. Flathead Lake is even more beautiful than Tahoe. The Icefields Parkway, in Canada from Banff to Jasper is 120 miles of glaciers to the west all along the way. Even better on a bike.
