Hike at Feather Falls

WHERE: Oroville, Feather Falls Scenic Area, Plumas National Forest, Butte County

WHAT: This is a 9 miles moderate hike, not for beginners. Trailhead Elevation: 2,490 feet, Top Elevation: 2,500 feet.  Don’t leave your camera behind. Feather Falls National Scenic Trail offers you an incredible view of Bald Rock Dome, Bald Rock Canyon, and the 640-foot waterfall, Feather Falls. The trail to the falls forks about a quarter of a mile down the path. The lower trail to the left is shorter at about 3.5 miles, but more difficult due to occasionally steep elevation changes. This trail is primarily downhill to the falls three quarters of the way. The final quarter is primarily uphill. The upper trail to the right is about 4.5 miles and makes the trip to the falls much more gradually. The trails join again just before the final three quarters of a mile climb to the Feather Falls overlook. We will hike the upper trail.

We should be done hiking around 4:00 and back to Roseville around 6:00.

WHO: This hike is for those who are in good physical condition and have recent (within a month) experience in hiking over 8 miles or other strenuous activity such as mountain biking/running. Not for beginners!

WHEN: We will meet at 7:00am depart at 7:10am- Rosevilie Park & Ride

DIRECTIONS to trailhead :  about a two hour drive from Roseville ~  Hwy 65 to Maryville 70 to Oroville . From Oroville, take Hwy #162 east (Olive Hwy) for 6.7 miles, turn right on Forbestown Road for 6.3 miles, turn left on Lumpkin Road for 11.4 miles to the signed turnoff for Feather Falls. Turn left at sign and drive 1.5 miles to the trailhead.

Please be prepared to help out drivers with gas money (A good rule of thumb is $3.50 for each hour of drive time.)

WHAT TO BRING: Layered clothing that wicks moisture, comfortable hiking boots, hiking poles, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, at least 2 liter containers of water (hydration bladders or Nalgene-type bottles), food for lunch and snacks and a camera,  (optional)$$ for gas

    So Helen,
How intermediate does one need to be? Do you think I could handle this one?

Julie, let's look at doing a beginner hike in June, with Kim Paul. Any chance of getting a weekday off?

Since it is a curvy road I'd like to drive my little sports car (Scion FR-S) which only holds one other person. It rides a little rough, but it's not too bad. Is that OK Helen?

Bummed to miss this! I will be in Minnesota for my niece's med school graduation. A good reason to miss, but, still disappointed. :-) Enjoy!
