The Oakland World Percussion Festival

This is not an actual drum circle for our group, but is an organized event that comes to us from new member "Shira". There is a website with lots of information that lists free performances and a free community drum circle. (The time of the drum circle is not known at this time.) The only fees to be paid are for various workshops that you can sign up for.

Here is the site: http://totalrhythm.com/OWPF/index.html .

You can RSVP to let others know you are going, but not required.

I arrived at about 3pm and watched two performances in the main hall of the church. Then, as promised, the drum circle happened at about 5:15. It was facilitated with maybe 50 drummers, and was quite good. It ended promptly at 6pm. I saw only a few of our members there but there could have been others who I didn't see. Parking was not too difficult.... I parked only a few blocks away.

I was there for the entire day. It was awesome. My favorite workshops were by Congolese drummer Kiazi Malonga, West African with Diabate and Middle Eastern drumming session by Susu. We even had a small group jam session with Susu after her session ended. She was great. Overall a wonderful experience and would definitely recommend going to the festival.

The big drum circle will be at 5pm after the drumming workshops. I will try and find out about parking, but carpool might be a good idea.

I saw a message on a drum circle Yahoo group that said the community drum circle will be at the end of the day.
