Imagine a street (in this case a cul-de-sac) blocked off to traffic and reserved for a block party type of event - anchored by a drum circle..... our drum circle. Residents of the neighborhood have been invited to attend to meet their neighbors, have a snack, and listen to the music that we produce in our drum circle ..... and they will be welcome to join in.
It's all part of "National Night Out" and the following text is from their press release at http://www.natw.org/resources/press-release/
The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) has announced that the “29th Annual National Night Out (NNO) program will culminate on Tuesday, August 6, 2013.
National Night Out, a year-long community building campaign, is designed to: (1) Heighten crime prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most cities and towns celebrate National Night Out with a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events such as block parties, cookouts, parades, festivals, visits from local officials and law enforcement, safety fairs, and youth events.
The city of Santa Clara is supporting NNO and there is no cost. I have the permit for the street closure. I have asked residents to bring a dessert or beverage to share. Our drum circle group will supply the instruments to play.
So, if an evening of drumming on a well lit street as part of a neighborhood block party sounds interesting, please RSVP so we will have a good strong group. 20 or more would be fantastic.
Handicap access is easy. Dogs allowed. Restrooms available in my house. Extra drums and percussion instruments are usually available but not guaranteed.
Please note that this is a Tuesday evening. Any participating drummers who want to come early to avoid traffic are welcome to join me for drumming and a barbecue dinner, in my back yard starting at 4pm. This will be announced as a separate event. At 6:45 we'll set up the drum circle in the street. We'll finish by 9:30 or 10:00pm.
