Retreat Drum Circle

You are invited to a two hour drum circle which is part of a weekend retreat called "Bonfire Heights". The location (as listed above) is near the peninsula town of La Honda. We'll help the retreat participants, with our drums and instruments, discover the joys of drumming and to fulfill the retreat's agenda. The drum circle will feature fire dancers and a bonfire. There is no charge for BADC members and one guest to attend the circle. Since most of the retreat participants may be first time drummers, this could be an opportunity for more experienced drummers to lead and teach. Please bring extra drums and instruments for the retreat participants to use. There is a limit on the number of drummers so please only make a "yes" RSVP if you really plan to attend.

BADC members are also invited to attend the entire weekend retreat for a reduced rate. Pay only for lodging and food; the registration fee is waived. For more information about the retreat please see http://www.bonfireheights.com/. If interested in attending the retreat, contact Darius at [masked] or call at[masked]-6205.

I don't have an exact count of how many BADC members attended, or how many retreat participants joined in the drumming. (I think we had 13 BADC members and about 5 to 7 "retreaters" drumming.) There were many people milling around and talking so we found it hard to form a circle. In the beginning, Fern and Sandy led some kids through some short sessions. We had a 10 minute break where we drummed along with two fire dancers who used burning balls, hoops, and juggling pins to dazzle and entertain us. Later, Richard and Fern kept the adult beat sessions moving along in a free form drumming style - one person starts something, and the rest of us follow along. The location was great with redwood trees, benches, a fire pit, and a gazebo/stage. Darius provided wine, beer, and all the ingredients for s'mores. (I had a s'more and wanted some more, but managed to limit myself to only one. So yummy and fattening.)

Thanks to all who attended and who helped make this event happen.

Wow, just home from the woods; I did stay the weekend. You are incredible adventurist to have ventured so far up the coast and into the mountains at night... to drum. Thanks to all of you for making the event memorable!

WOW! What a ride! Thank you graham for leading the car-train back down the hill to civilization! I had an awesome night especially meeting so many brave souls who made the drive in the dark...it was worth the road, don't ya think?
Fire dancers were an extra treat as was the bonfire, smores, bunny snacks, wine....that was the first time ever for me to play along with dozens of conversations going on at the same time....it was a very 'conceptual symphany thing'....so much good fun!!

I'm still not sure about the 7:30 vs. 8:00 start time so I'll suggest that members try to arrive at 7:30 so we can get set up and be ready to drum by 8:00. Please bring your extra percussion items, something to sit on, and enough clothing to stay warm.

What kinds of drums or percussion are people bringing to share retreat?

Can't go unless I get a ride. Since my right knee surgery driving is prohibited for the near term.

Just spoke with Darius's partner, Linda. She assumed only 10 people were coming from group - was very surprised to learn 20 are signed up! Confirmed I will facilitate to help the never-drummed-before conference participants get into the groove. IMPORTANT details: Drum circle will start 7:30ish. It will be out in a field. No chairs provided. There will be a bonfire & some fire dancers who may want to dance to our drumming - that would be waaay cool :) Probably VERY cold, maybe foggy & it will be dark. Dress in layers. She said they (the leaders) will lead the way to the field, but carrying a personal flashlight too is probably a good idea. Bring your own chair or something else to sit on. We did not talk about an end time to the drum circle, so perhaps it will come to a syngeristic group close on it's own(?) The roads are dark and winding going home, so if you want to stay overnight, you should call now to arrange.

Sounds like a drumming adventure is awaiting us!

This looks very interesting...I hope there is some minimal guidance/facilitation with this type of group dealing with a short time frame. I saw the young man with the trumpet in SF...he is awesome.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
