Drum Circle at DeFrank Center

The Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center has agreed to let us use their facility for a drum circle in February. We'll have the main hall which has a wooden floor and a high ceiling, and can accommodate a very large group.

Details: Mostly open drumming with a small amount of activities and rhythm sharing for fun. Chairs will be available or bring your own favorite. Please bring as many drums and percussion instruments as you can for sharing. OK to bring snacks and beverages for your own consumption or sharing, but no alcohol. We have the hall at 1pm, so we'll probably be able to get started at about 1:15. There is a small parking lot, so most of the parking will be on the street. The Alameda has un-metered parking limited to two hours hours. Watch out for parking restrictions in the residential areas.

Info about the Center, from the www.deFrank.org website:

Mission Statement
Through collaboration and unity, the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center strives to provide a diverse platform for our community to meet, learn, be challenged and grow.

The Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center strives to be the community's premier resource hub and a recognized leader in promoting health, strength, diversity and inclusiveness.

Other Stuff: The Center is only asking to "pass the hat" in order to use the space. I'll ask everyone to contribute $2. The money goes to the Center.  Through the Center's newsletter, members of the Center and members of the LGBT community will be invited to participate. (Please bring extra drums and instruments to share with our new LGBT friends.)

Concerned about going to a gay place?: No one is going to assume that you are gay or lesbian. Think of it this way: you don't have to be sick to go into a hospital; you don't have to be religious to enter a church; you don't have to buy anything when you go into a store; you don't have to be gay to go into the LGBT Center. Get over it. OK?

After the Circle: Heather's "Rhythms of Wellness" circle at 7pm (the same day) has been cancelled. So nothing is planned after.... however, if people are hungry, we could walk to a local place for a bite to eat.

I had such a great time! Thank you so much for organizing! I don't have a car, but will try to bring a guest (who has a car) to the next Meet-ups if my schedule allows.

Another very good drum circle (in my opinion). Thanks to everyone who attended to help make this a fun event. The RSVP count just before the circle was 31. There were 16 drummers and guests who were either "no shows" or other "not attending" status, leaving only 15 from our meetup group. Adding in 4 from the center, the total was 19. This matches - within 1 or 2 - the headcount that I made at one point.

I am absolutely amazed at the interest in this event! In just over 24 hours, there were 17 drummers signed up. The list keeps growing. We will have more people from the Center's membership newsletter. It's gonna be huge!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
