I recently bought a djembe, still have my original dumbek, plus an Indian-made frame drum & an Iroquois-style frame drum I made at a women's drum making retreat in the 90s. I also have an assortment of shakers, a tambourine, bells, etc.
I've loved the beat of the drum since Ringo happened on the world scene in 1964. Knew my folks wouldn't get me a trap set, settled for a pair of sticks & a drum pad when I was a teenager. Got my dumbek after beginning to study with the Sufis in the late 70s. Drumming takes me to another state of consciousness, connects me to Divinity.
Started drumming in the 70s with my 1st dumbek. Didn't do much in the 80s/90s, but getting back into regular practice over the last 4 years. Been looking for a group to join/start since moving back to Bay Area in 2012. No formal training.
Great experience. Wow all the people! Lots of fun!
