BC Hikers Pages

Many thanks to our member Jane Keyes for her editorial assistance with website materials.

While the utmost care is taken to research BC Hikers excursions fully and rate them according to level of difficulty, provide detailed “what to bring” instructions, and then ensure the safest possible environment for attendees during events, the nature of our recreational activities is inherently risky. All participants MUST determine and take responsibility for their own ability and preparedness in terms of exploring our beautiful but often challenging natural terrain. In order words, your participation is AT YOUR OWN RISK.
In order to provide legal protection to our organizers – those energetic volunteers who spend their valuable time researching, planning, and leading multi-leveled events for the benefit of members and their guests – beginning immediately we will require all attendees to sign a legal waiver before participating in any posted event. Your signature on this form will be your legally binding acknowledgement of your understanding and acceptance of all associated risks.

How It Works

Organizers will arrive at the meetup location with the waiver form, which will then be passed around for the signatures of all participants, and witnessed, prior to the start of the event. Only those who sign the form will be permitted to participate.

Please Read Prior to Signing Up For Any Posted Event

The waiver is posted here. For efficiency, we request that you READ THIS FORM IN ITS ENTIRETY prior to signing up for any posted event. In this way, all attendees will know exactly what they are being asked to sign on the day of the event, expediting the process and enabling us all to get out and enjoy our outdoor landscape as quickly as possible.

If, upon reading the waiver, you feel unprepared to sign it in order to attend BC Hikers events, please note that there are many other hiking groups operating in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia that may be more suitable for you for a variety of reasons.

We thank you for your attention to this important matter.

The organizer or coordinator of a BC Hikers trip or activity is not a professional mountaineer, guide or trained first aid attendant. The function of the organizer or coordinator is only to organize the trip, ensure it gets underway and be familiar or have knowledge of the access to the area, the route or routes. Participants on a club trip or activity are responsible for their own safety and are expected to have the necessary skills, experience, fitness, suitable first aid supplies and appropriate equipment in good working order.

In consideration of BC Hikers allowing me to join BC Hikers
or to participate in any activities or programs organized or authorized by or on behalf of BC Hikers including, but not limited to, club trips, camps, expeditions, courses or programs involving Wilderness Activities, I hereby agree as follows:

1. TO WAIVE ANY AND ALL CLAIMS that I have, or may have in the future, against BC Hikers and ______ (initial here) TO†RELEASE BC Hikers from any and all liability for any loss, damage, expense, or injury, including death, that I may suffer, or that my next of kin may suffer, resulting from or in connection with my membership in The Vancouver Mountaineers, or my participation in any activities or programs organized or authorized by or on behalf of The Vancouver Mountaineers, including activities or programs involving Wilderness Activities, DUE TO ANY CAUSE WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE, BREACH OF CONTRACT, OR BREACH OF ANY STATUTORY OR OTHER DUTY OF CARE, INCLUDING ANY DUTY OF CARE UNDER THE OCCUPIERS LIABILITY ACT, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 337, OR ANY APPLICABLE OCCUPIERS LIABILITY LEGISLATION, ON THE PART OF THE VANCOUVER MOUNTAINEERS, AND ALSO INCLUDING THE FAILURE OF THE VANCOUVER MOUNTAINEERS TO TAKE REASONABLE STEPS TO SAFEGUARD OR PROTECT ME FROM THE RISKS, DANGERS AND HAZARDS REFERRED TO ABOVE.
2. TO HOLD HARMLESS AND INDEMNIFY BC Hikers from any and all liability for any damage to property of or personal injury to any third party, resulting from any aspect of my membership in BC Hikers, or my participation in any activities or programs organized or authorized by or on behalf of BC Hikers;
3. This Agreement shall be effective and binding upon my heirs, next of kin, executors, administrators, assigns and representatives, in the event of my death or incapacity;
4. This Agreement and any rights, duties and obligations as between the parties to this Agreement shall be governed by and interpreted solely in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia and no other jurisdictions; and
5. Any litigation involving the parties of this Agreement shall be brought solely within the Province of British Columbia and shall be within the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the Province of British Columbia.

Unless the executive of BC Hikers directs otherwise, this Agreement shall apply to all subsequent membership renewals or participation in any activities or programs organized or authorized by or on behalf of BC Hikers

In entering into this Agreement, I am not relying upon any oral or written representations or statements made by BC Hikers with respect to the safety of Wilderness Activities and any activities or programs organized or authorized by or on behalf of BC Hikers, other than what is set forth in this Agreement.

There is no need to RSVP "No", if you are not attending. We only need to know who IS attending. The "No" feature is there for people who need to change their RSVP.

The "YES" list is for people who are SURE they will attend an event. If you think you may be able to make it, please do not click "YES". As always, if you are on the "YES" list, we expect you to show up. If you don't, we will remove you from the group.

The "Wait list" is activated when an event is full. If you are on the Wait list, you are waiting for someone from the "YES" list to cancel, then you can take his spot. Do not show up at an event unless your name appears on the "YES" list. You will be removed from the group if you do so.

Members-Only events are for members only. We host these events because there is always a wait list of members trying to get on the "YES" list. In order to make it easier for members to get in, we make some events members-only. This is a private club and members should have priority over guests to sign up for gatherings. If you are a couple and would like to come to an event together, please register as members individually and RSVP as members. If only one of you can get on the "YES" list and you do not want to come alone, then wait for the next event. On each event posting, the organizer gives a deadline as to when one has to update their RSVP status prior to the event. It is usually 24 hours. If you change your status after the deadline, we will label you as "Last-Minute Cancellation Offender" and if this happens again,
you will be removed from the group.

We strive to create a safe and comfortable social network environment for our members and in order to do so, we ask you to follow these rules. Thank you for your cooperation.

Be on time.
