On November 4, Eva Sajoo will present on why Muslims have an interest in secularism
Do Muslims in Canada and around the world have an interest in secularism?
The growing power of Islamist political parties in the wake of the Arab Spring revolts and a number of high profile blaphemy cases around the world worry many secularists in North America. However, Troy Media syndicated columnist Eva Sajoo argues in a recent column that Muslims from countries like Iran and Pakistan have a strong interest in the separation of church and state in Canada and the USA.
Sajoo will present her thinking at our meeting. Her presentation will begin at about 11:00am, and will be followed by a brief discussion.
Eva Sajoo is a research associate in the Centre for Comparative Study of Muslim Studies and Cultures at Simon Fraser University. She has taught at the University of Science and Technology in Beijing as well as UBC. She has published work on gender, development, and education in Muslim Societies. In addition to her academic work, she is a regular contributor to the news media, notably on Afghanistan.
All are welcome to attend. After about half an hour of coffee, tea, and socializing, we discuss topics of interest to our members. Keep up to date with our current topics at http://bchumanist.ca
