Elfin Lakes Exploration - overnighter

We will hike to the cabin Friday, set our stuff up, dump our packs and go exploring - how much depends on our energy and conditions.  On Saturday we will do a trip to the Gargoyles or Columnar Peak and then head back to our vehicles and home (and maybe a pub visit). Please note there is a $15 fee for staying in the Elfin Lakes cabin, so be prepared to pay this in cash.

Elfin Lakes
Difficulty: Intermediate
Time: 6 hours
Distance: 22km
Elevation Gain: 600 meters

SAFETY: Please understand that this is a group event, which means you must stay with the group, look out for other members of the group (although we are all ultimately responsible for our own safety) and do what the group is doing. Wandering off, not paying attention the where the group is, charging off ahead to the point where we never see you again or stopping to take photos for half an hour are all good things to when you’re on your own, but not when you’re with a group! This isn’t to say we all need to follow along like lemmings on the trail, but we do need to regroup often and let someone else know if you’re stopping for a bathroom break, or going ahead etc. Also, if you are ahead, please wait at any intersections or points in the trail where you’re unsure of where to go. There is safety in numbers (this is especially relevant in winter) and why group events are a good idea – if it’s not your idea of fun, please don’t join!

Level of fitness: Please ensure that you are fit enough to join these events. All require a good level of cardio, stamina and strength as there is usually steep, long uphill sections on most hikes and you will need to be able to keep up to the group.
PLEASE! No guests (have people join if they want to come – its simple!), no kids and no dogs – thanks!

Please bring the following:

Hiking Boots
Poles if you use them
Headlamp and spare batteries
Water-proof/ wind-resistant Jacket
Layered Clothing
Water
Food
First aid supplies
Change of clothing
Camera !
Your happy self! (leave your grumpy self at home)
10 Essentials

PLUS: Everything you'll need to be self sufficient for a 2 day backpacking trip!

Carpooling:

Please carpool to events whenever possible. The high cost of gas and maintaining a vehicle make this a very sensible option for vehicle owners and allows those without a car to get to the events. While vehicle owners are free to set their own reasonable fee for carpooling, it is typically suggested that passengers offer the driver $5.00 per hour of driving (includes mileage and vehicle wear & tear). Please state in your RSVP whether you can offer a ride or need a ride, and where you will be coming from. Passengers, please ensure you show up on time and bring an extra bag for wet/muddy footwear and clothing. Also, please make every effort to get to a convenient pick up place for your driver!

Please do not leave carpooling arrangements until the last minute – you, not the event organizer, are responsible for arranging your own carpooling to events. Thanks!

Looks like we're going to have nice some weather for our trip: http://www.yr.no/place/Canada/British_Columbia/Elfin_Lakes/

Bring your cameras, the views here are stunning!

Not sure we'll need them but given the marginal snow conditions everywhere else, please bring microspikes or somehting similar, along with your snowshoes.

Also, there are some colder temps in the forecast than we've had lately so come prepared for this.

The fee for staying in the cabin at Elfin Lakes is $15 per night per person so please bring this, in cash, to be paid at the trail head. See everyone at the church on Friday morning :) :)

Daphne, I got Sigrid and Anna and I think Elspeth asked me, but I have to double check. Will let you know either way.

      November 26, 2013

  • Kay

I'd love to do an overnighter to Elfin! How would you feel about someone coming on skis vs. snowshoes?

    November 25, 2013

    • Elspeth

oops didn't mean to press enter quite so soon :) I wouldn't mind keeping this a snowshoe trip. Makes me feel better as an organizer having everyone together and pretty much accounted for. If you do have any interest in posting a back country ski trip to Elfin, send me an email and maybe you could organize one? Let me know.

      November 25, 2013

    • Kay

No worries - that makes sense from an organizational perspective. I'm definitely happy to put together a backcountry ski trip to the area; let me check the calendar and I'll be in touch.
