Sea to Sky Gondola (Squamish) Al's Habrich Ridge Trail

This hike will definitely be exploratory as I haven't been there before, so if you're not the adventurous type, this might not be the trip for you :)

The Sea to Sky gondola at the Stawamus Chief is due to open on May 16 and it looks like its going to open up some easy (although not cheap) access to some very cool trails! They also plan to have snowshoeing in winter. Visit the site and have a look: http://www.seatoskygondola.com/adventures/hiking. The cost of a roundtrip on the gondola is $35, but apparently by mid April they are going to announce a summer only pass which should be a good deal.

BEFORE signing up to this hike, please visit the link below and read and agree to the disclaimer/waiver that's there:

 http://www.meetup.com/BC-Outdoor-Adventures/pages/Waiver_and_other_stuff_you_NEED_TO_KNOW!

The hike description below is from their website:

Al's Habrich Ridge Trail

This trail is perhaps the most dramatic trail in the area. Huge vistas and views across the Stawamus river, the valley, Howe Sound, Goat Ridge… it goes on forever. Extraordinary landscape as well with granite outcroppings along the route and multiple small lakes and tarns. Head out on the Backcountry Access road turning left up past the water tower turnoff and Blueberry Lake. Turn left off the road and head up the trail. It climbs steeply and consistently, twists and turns around the rocks for several kilometers until it reaches the ridge proper.

Level of difficulty: Advanced/Backcountry
Distance: 5.8km one way/11.6km return
Estimated time: 6-8 hours return
Elevation Gain: 954m

Extraordinaire !! Just brilliant, breath taking views from far a-Top, way way above the chiefs! Cant believe, I actually was up there - it surely is difficult/back country hiking. Very technical raw trail - probably we were the first large group to do this trail. Elspeth, once again what can I say -- You double rock!! Thank you so very much for leading us up there. I thoroughly enjoyed the day hiking with wonderful group of fellow hikers and thank you everyone for your lovely company, enjoyed meeting everyone. Of course, it was perfect day weather wise to do this hike. Have a good night everyone and hope to see you all sometimes soon on our beautiful BC trails :)))

Hi everyone, just a reminder that this trip is going to require a round trip ticket on the gondola, which costs $35 unless you have a pass. Currently the weather is looking pretty good, but if this deteriorates too much I will cancel. If we're paying that much, and driving all the way to Squamish, I want to have a good weather day! The views from the top are spectacular but we need a good day to see them!!

    • Elspeth

I did think of that but was up the Sea to Summit hike last weekend and it is quite long - 3 hours at least, and it says the hike we have planned is 6-7 hours so it might be a bit much.

      2 · June 5

    • harold123

The idea was just to go from the base to the top of the gondola in bad/ cloudy weather, not to the summit

      June 7

  • Mira

Sorry, I have to cancel. I am not feeling very well today, not sure how I will feel in the morning. Enjoy the hike.

    • Lynda

Hi Otto, what time are we meeting tomorrow? Is 8:00 or 8:15 at Burrard and Davie ok?

      June 7

  • Michael

Just a note about the hike, which I did it today: if you want to go all the way to the top you must bush whack around a bit and get on the snow- bring microspikes and gaitors. The signs for the trail end at one point and you must find your own way: it is not hard but definitely a goo topo map or GPS would be helpful. The snow is hard pack but slippery so without spikes you might slide a lot: the views from the tops are totally amazing and worth. It took me 5h in total, at a reasonably fast speed. Make sure you have sturdy boots if you plan to go on the snow...

    Hi Elspeth,

I was just up there ten days ago. Definitely exploratory, could have used snowshoes in certain spots. But the snow should be mostly gone by June 8, and they're slowly improving the trail (currently only tape-flagged). FYI, the first section after the creek-crossing will require some scrambling, along with a fair amount of bush-whacking. Hikers will definitely want their best boots.

Looks like I will be out of town for a month around the time of both trips. Since the waiting list is long, I'll bow out early and hopefully someone else can get the spot.
