The "bring a kid" beginner backpacking trip!

Have a kid or young relative that's been bugging you to take them backpacking? Or maybe you just want to introduce them in a way that doesn't scare the bejeezus out of them.

Here's your chance.

We're going to take these neophytes into the wilds of Sycamore Canyon as we traverse along side Sycamore Creek and the massive trees that have grown up there over the years. This riparian area is fed by Parsons Spring and Summer spring.

It's 4 miles each way over mild to moderate terrain. Water is in abundance as well as shade. There are several areas along the way to stop and swim, have a snack or just take a breather.

I'd like to keep the ages of the minors between 10-17. If you want to bring a child younger than that we'll have to talk about it. I'd also prefer to keep it at a 1:1 ratio adult to child. These trips are great bonding experiences and dividing attention between children lessens that experience and reduces supervision. However, if your situation doesn't allow for that (i.e., single parent w/ more than one kid, etc. ) we'll talk about it and work something out.

If you are yourself a beginner, I recommend attending our Beginner Backpacking Clinic ( http://www.meetup.com/BCHClub/events/104326622/ ) before signing up. Heck, bring the kid to that too! Then you'll both be on the ball once we're in the wild!

Hike Arizona has more information on the hike and some great pictures to help you decide. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=86

The trailhead is at the end of a pretty beat up backroad. You don't need a 4wd, but I'd recommend high clearance vehicle. Carpool location is at the Denny's. Try to carpool if you can, it saves in so many ways.

If you or your child has any special medical concerns, I'd like to know at the onset so we can address it.

Please outline who you are bringing in your rsvp. (12 yr old boy, 15 yr old girl, grumpy 40-ish spouse that hates nature, etc.)

I hope to see some of you there!

Contact Brad Strong if you'd like to be an organizer. I simply have too many commitments over the summer to do another trip.

    Last minute stuff:

Weather: Looks like it will be close to perfect. High in the mid 80's lows in the mid 50's.

If you plan on swimming any bring something that will dry off quickly or a change of clothes.

Bees have been very active all through the state so I sincerely recommend NOT wearing any perfume or colognes.

There is poison ivy in the area. Please take a minute to familiarize yourself with what it looks like: http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=189179

Anything else can wait for the trailhead!

Hmm, looks like everyone wants to ride with Tovan! I live in Chandler, too, and drive a mini-van. I have taken it on lots of dirt roads but I don't know how beat up this road is. I am fond of my oil pan! Do you think the ole mini-van could it? If so, someone in Chandler could ride with me. I'm at 202 and McQueen.

It sounds like there will be plenty of carpool options at the Denny's. The road isn't horrible most of the way, it's just washboard road. It's the last mile that gets ugly.

"Ugly" is good enough for me to leave the mini van home! I'm riding with Tovan now. Thanks, Corwin!

I can drive my Xterra to carpool from Denny's and take a parent and child with gear along with my daughter and I to conserve fuel.

A couple of great questions were asked, so I'll go over the answers here for the benefit of everyone.

Dogs - We won't be taking any pets on this trip. It's mostly a liability issue.

Campfire - Unless the National Forest Service institutes a fire ban for the area for the trip's scheduled dates we will be having a communal fire.

As we get closer to the date I'll be sending everyone some information via email. One packet will be about basic backpacking stuff. Since I don't know everyone's relative skill levels just assume its for the kids. If you can take something away from it as well all the better.

The second is just some tips on how to make backpacking more enjoyable for kids. They're just things I've learned over the years that take the stress out of an athletic activity and being in the wild. If they like the first trip you usually have them hooked.

Also, on the day of the trip at the trailhead I'll go over some basic info; safety guidelines, leave no trace (http://lnt.org/), what to expect on the trip, behavior, etc. I'm not huge on "rules", but with a large group I find it better if everyone is on the same page from the get-go.

Lastly, if anyone has a question just message me. When I send out the packets I'll include my mobile number for last minute stuff.
