Have a kid or young relative that's been bugging you to take them backpacking? Or maybe you just want to introduce them in a way that doesn't scare the bejeezus out of them.
Here's your chance.
We're going to take these neophytes into the wilds of Sycamore Canyon as we traverse along side Sycamore Creek and the massive trees that have grown up there over the years. This riparian area is fed by Parsons Spring and Summer spring.
It's 4 miles each way over mild to moderate terrain. Water is in abundance as well as shade. There are several areas along the way to stop and swim, have a snack or just take a breather.
I'd like to keep the ages of the minors between 10-17. If you want to bring a child younger than that we'll have to talk about it. I'd also prefer to keep it at a 1:1 ratio adult to child. These trips are great bonding experiences and dividing attention between children lessens that experience and reduces supervision. However, if your situation doesn't allow for that (i.e., single parent w/ more than one kid, etc. ) we'll talk about it and work something out.
If you are yourself a beginner, I recommend attending our Beginner Backpacking Clinic ( http://www.meetup.com/BCHClub/events/104326622/ ) before signing up. Heck, bring the kid to that too! Then you'll both be on the ball once we're in the wild!
Hike Arizona has more information on the hike and some great pictures to help you decide. http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=86
The trailhead is at the end of a pretty beat up backroad. You don't need a 4wd, but I'd recommend high clearance vehicle. Carpool location is at the Denny's. Try to carpool if you can, it saves in so many ways.
If you or your child has any special medical concerns, I'd like to know at the onset so we can address it.
Please outline who you are bringing in your rsvp. (12 yr old boy, 15 yr old girl, grumpy 40-ish spouse that hates nature, etc.)
I hope to see some of you there!
