Mt Wrightson is Southern Arizona's most well-known sky island. On a clear day, you can see Mexico from the top of the mountain.
At 9.453', it towers 7,000' above the surrounding desert floor. The hike starts at Madera Canyon and is a chest-pounding workout but the views from the top are spectacular! Ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir inhabit higher reaches of the hike while lower and more exposed slopes are covered with oak woodlands.
We'll head up the Old Baldy Trail up, make a figure 8, and return on the Super Trail. Total distance is 12.4 miles with 4,000' of elevation gain. It's just a little easier than hiking out of the Grand Canyon. We'll camp at Baldy Saddle and day hike to the summit.
