Mt Wrightson Backpack

Mt Wrightson is Southern Arizona's most well-known sky island.  On a clear day, you can see Mexico from the top of the mountain.

At 9.453', it towers 7,000' above the surrounding desert floor.  The hike starts at Madera Canyon and is a chest-pounding workout but the views from the top are spectacular!  Ponderosa pine and Douglas-fir inhabit higher reaches of the hike while lower and more exposed slopes are covered with oak woodlands.

We'll head up the Old Baldy Trail up, make a figure 8, and return on the Super Trail.  Total distance is 12.4 miles with 4,000' of elevation gain.  It's just a little easier than hiking out of the Grand Canyon.  We'll camp at Baldy Saddle and day hike to the summit.

What a great trip! I didn't expect all the shade, that was a welcome surprise. The views were fantastic. I'm glad I was able to make this one. Thanks everyone :D

The weather looks good this weekend!.. It will be warm at the lower elevations. Our camp will be at 8,000' so expect it to get down to about 40 degrees at night.

I called to work, I apologize for the inconvenience. I'm a contractor, so when work calls it's a must. Sorry

Is this a carry enough water for 2 days trip?

    May 9, 2013

    • Dave B

Bonnie: No, there are water sources. Just before Josephine Saddle (2.1 miles, 1,700' elev gain) is Sprung Spring. We'll tank up at Bellows Spring (3.5 miles), hike another 0.6 miles and dry camp near Baldy Saddle. The HikeAz water reports indicate both springs are reliable.
