Are you up for a challenging non-technical canyoneering weekend? If you like riparian canyons, boulder hopping, bushwacking, and deep wading, then this trip is for you.
Chevelon Canyon is a remote and rugged area up on the Mogollon Rim. Expect great swimming holes, grassy campsites, towering canyon walls, and lots of wildlife!
The route will be 16 hard off-trail miles, so this trip is well suited to fit and experienced backpackers. This is a water hike with possible swims. You will be in and out of the creek all day long.
The plan is to camp Friday evening at Chevelon Crossing Campground. After setting up the car shuttle on Saturday morning, we'll hike an easy 3-4 miles south to Durfee Crossing and drop into Chevelon Canyon. We'll head upstream for the next day and a half, camping creekside Saturday evening. On Sunday, we'll exit at the dam. We'll stop in Pine at the Rimside Grill for a late lunch on the way home.
The hike leader will screen all participants. If we haven't hiked together before, we'll need to have a chat about your fitness level and experience.
