Massacre, Mayhem, and Murder on Mingus Mountain (Dayhike with opt. Car Camping)

  • Oct 26, 2013 · 8:00 AM

With All Hallow's Eve approaching and the border between the worlds of living and dead growing thin I can think of no finer way to usher the holiday in than to have a day-hike through a storied area (including cemetery) stay overnight at Dead Horse Ranch State Park and swap scary stories and homemade treats round the campfire.

North Mingus Trail #105 runs 5 miles to the peak of Mingus Mountain. The trail starts in Mescal Gulch, which was the site of a bloody, two-day battle between the Hualapai and Yavapai tribes. It then passes a small overgrown cemetery before taking a decent upswing to approach the peak. The round trip to the peak is 9 miles, and runs from 6211 ft elevation to 7788 ft at the highest.

After the hike we'll be staying at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. This part is optional, but I hope to see everyone. Typical car camping with ghost stories and Halloween treats.

Carpool location is listed above and there is parking  to be had at the trailhead.

Trip details can be found here: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=469

Costumes are optional, fear an inevitability...

We will be staying Friday and Saturday night. However, I could not get the same campsite for two nights so we will be over in 109. The check-in time just did not work plus you really need at least two nights to car-camp.

To clarify, it's 0800 at the carpool location but 1000 if you are meeting at the trail head.

I'm going to be staying the night before this as Dead Horse Ranch State Park as well so I won't be able to meet at the carpool location. Use the Lower Trailhead location from hikearizona, it's spot on.

I'm pretty sure that Scottsdale guy that killed his family lives in the desert close to there. The train riders see him sometimes.

Hey, Corwin! Which campground do you plan on staying at? Ideally, Eli and I would make the hike while the remaining three members of my family hang out and fish (they don't hike). I can reserve our own campsite, just need to know the name.

Corwin: Isn't this the area where the police are looking for the headless ax murderer?

I'm not sure. I might want to check into that.
