Winter Snowshoe/Cross Country Skiing Weekend

  • Feb 22, 2014 · 7:00 AM

Here's your opportunity for a winter weekend of snowshoeing and cross country skiing up north while staying warm at night in a shared 8 person yurt complete with wood heat. The winter season offers 40+ km of well groomed cross county ski trails and 25 km of snowshoe trails near the Flagstaff Nordic Ski Center (FNSC), 15 miles from downtown Flagstaff on Highway 180. We 'll use our own or rent (additional $) snowshoes or cross country skis at the FNSC and spend Saturday on the trails. Then we'll finish the day at the Yurt (located a mile from the lodge) for the night for a group dinner, dessert & drinks;  no tent, no snow caves, just kick off your gear and sleep on your own pad & sleeping bag.

Sunday we'll ski or snowshoe out again and possibly explore the lava tube nearby (if accessible).  If there is no snow that weekend we'll spend the weekend exploring the same trails on foot.

Note: Dogs are allowed in the yurts (never alone) and I will be bringing my dog - who only attacks people who snore :) lf you're interested in bringing a cold hardly dog please talk to me before you sign up as it involves additional costs and is limited to one other dog as a courtesy to others.

Also, be aware this trip involves a shared yurt and relatively tight quarters and may not be for everyone. So, please contact me before you sign up If I have never hiked with you before. Thanks.

Because we aren't snowshoeing or CC skiing in we won't be doing the potluck saturday. So plan your own meal. Thx.

Saturday morning we'll all meetup behind the Denny's, organize the carpool & head up to Flagstaff. We'll head to Lava cave & hike in. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes & 3 light sources for the hike. After that we can grab lunch in town and check into the yurt & explore the trails around the Nordic Center. It's roughly a miles walk from the lodge to the yurt. There is a wood stove & propane grill & toilet at the yurt but no water so bring as much as you'll need for the night. Sunday we'll head out early and drive just S of Flag to the Sandy's canyon TH and hike to Fisher Pt part of the AZT just outside of Walnut Canyon NM. We can go part way & double back or make a longer loop of it 6-12 miles depending on what we want to do. But no less than 2 in any group.

    Hi all,
Looks like warm weather in Flagstaff this week. Let's hope for a cold snap & snow next week or we'll be hiking instead of skiing or snowshoeing it.

More information on the rental and trail passes. Cross-country ski rental will be $30 including the boots poles skis and trail pass. Snowshoes will be $15 including shoes and trail pass. We can pick up the rentals anytime after 9 AM Saturday but can't check into the yurt until 1 PM. Snowshoes and skis can be kept overnight and returned the following morning . The yurt has a full futon and one twin bunk bed. There is a gear sled available for additional cost if you don't want to carry your gear to the yurt, which is approximately 1 mile from the lodge. With luck we'll have snow!

This sounds awesome. I'm from the midwest so I'm used to the cold.
