Come join us for one of the great Grand Canyon hikes along the Tonto Trail!
The Grand Canyon needs no introduction. Suffice it to say that it is one of the most beautiful and majestic places on Earth. It is indeed one of the premier backpacking destinations in the world and this 31 miles trek is a fantastic way to experience “The Canyon.”
Here’s the plan:
Friday: Drive up after work and camp/hotel on the South Rim
Saturday: Hike down 4,400’ on the Hermit Trail and camp at Hermit Rapids (7.3 miles). This day’s big drop takes us past Santa Maria Spring and the Tonto Trail junction and offers incredible views. Many believe Hermits Rapids is one of the best camping areas in the Canyon.
Sunday: Return to the Tonto Trail and hike to Granite Rapids (6.6 miles). We’ll climb back up 600’ to the Tonto and head east passing beautiful Monument Creek before dropping back down to the Colorado River for the evening.
Monday: Hike along the mostly flat Tonto Trail to Horn Creek (9.8 miles). We’ll pass Salt Creek on our way to scenic Horn Creek and it’s wild turkeys.
Tuesday: Hike to the Bright Angel Trail and climb out (3,300’ 7.3 miles). We’ll hike for an hour before reaching Indian Gardens and starting the big climb up and out. We'll enjoy a great meal on the South Rim before heading home.
There are lots of water sources in this part of the Canyon and we’ll have a creek or river next to our campsite each evening and will pass a water source during each day’s hike.
If you can join us, please jump on the wait list. I will move up people I know can do the hike. If I have not hiked with you before, we’ll have a conversation about who you have hiked with and I will add you with recommendations.
The permit is for 11 people. The deposit for this trip is $50 and the permit cost is $30. I will refund $20 to you at the trailhead. There will be no refunds if you cancel for any reason. Please check your schedule carefully before signing up.
