This is a classic backpacking trip in Arizona's second largest canyon, just west of Sedona.
We'll see beautiful red rock formations, a historic cabin, and grand vistas as we traverse the 21 mile loop. This is one of the great backpacking trips in Arizona. Imagine Sedona without the roads and homes.
We'll drive up Friday after work and car camp at the trailhead. On Saturday morning, we'll start down the Dogie Trail which drops us into Sycamore Canyon. The rocky trail turns north at the dry (hopefully) creek crossing and follows the Sycamore Basin Trail up Sycamore Canyon. With several of ups and downs at side drainages, we'll go a total of 9.5 miles to Saturday's camp at historic Taylor Cabin (built in the 1830's). There's lots to explore in the area including a large cave.
On Sunday, we'll hike the same way out maki g it 19 miles for the weekend.
This is not a beginners backpacking trip but anyone fit enough to do the miles is welcome. Campfires are allowed. Here's a write-up for Saturday's hike: http://hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=755
