Blue Lake in the Colorado San Juans

  • Jul 29, 2013 · 7:00 AM
  • TBA

Blue Lake in the San Juans  will be an epic backpack with a wide variety of activities and scenery. Plan on 2 days travel and 5 days backpacking for this trip.

On Monday we meet early in the morning for Our day of driving to the Three forks trail head. North East of Pagosa springs. We will car camp at the three forks trail head Monday Night.

Tuesday we will begin Our first day of Hiking. We will hike up the Most Western Fork that heads South to Blue lake. This will be a 7.1 mile hike starting at 10,200 feet and climbing to 11,500 feet, where  we will spend two nights at blue lake. This will give us a day to aclimate to elevation do some fishing, or we can do a day hike to Conejos peak at 13,159ft. The activity will be up to individuals.

We will not be back down below 11,000Ft until we return to the trail head.

Wednesday we will have are shortest hike to lake Anne of 5.2 miles. We will camp below lake Anne but we will be Climbing up to Lake Anne Fishing and exploring. It is above the tree line at 12,000 feet.

Day four we will hike 7.1 miles over to Adams fork of the three Forks. We will find camping as close to the top of the fork as possible. This puts us at a trail Junction That gives us access to Summit Peak Which is the highest peak in the area at 13,200.

On the morning of the Fifth day as an option we can bag the peak and then head 6.7 miles back down the Adams fork to Our Vehicles.

We will then spend the night in Pagosa Springs, and freshen up for the drive back the next day.

I will set up a hotel in Pagosa Springs and when I do I will post the fee. I expect it to be around 100 dollars per person for the hotel.

This will be a hike for experienced backpackers only and I will approve everyone. We can take up to 15 people. Everyone will go to the waiting list until I aprove them.

    Hi Jim,

I will be in Durango for a conference through Sunday July 28th. I would like to meet up with the group in Pagosa Springs to travel to the trailhead. Also, I'm up for a hotel in Pagosa after the backpack.

This training weekend is ideally geared for those on this (Colorado) trip: http://www.meetup.com/BCHClub/events/115337272/
Grab a spot while they're still available!

As Jim can attest, doing some high altitude training in the weeks leading up to this trip will 1) let you know if your fitness training is working, and 2) condition you for high altitude hiking.

At this point I have three people who do not want to splurge for the hotel I booked, so this is what I have come up with: If you do not want to stay in the hotel after the hike that is fine but you will be responsible for your own accommodations. For those not staying at the hotel I will still require a 50 dollar up front fee to come on the trip. The 50 dollars will be refunded at the trail head and only at the trail head. Otherwise it is not refundable for any reason . This ensures that people who are signing up are serious and avoids last minute drop outs.
I will extend until April 15 the payment time .

Once you make a decision let me know and forward the fee as soon as possible. As every time I change the hotel accommodations I pay a 25 dollar fee I will not take changes without a penalty so keep that in mind.

As for me I am looking forward to bed, bath, and hot tub after 5 days of camping and backpacking

    Jim,

Looks like it'll just be me, my buddy can't make it. No plus one. If I update the RSVP YES to reflect that (no plus 1) it won't move me on the waiting list due to the change will it? Thx.

I'm in if a spot opens up. I've done up to 2 nights backpacking, I'm not an expert but I should be in shape for it.

Jim. Done some higher alt. hiking in the Escudilla area and will be doing the GC between now and then. Have trekked & worked in AK and NZ and love alpine treks. Been on one trip with Lucky. Great group! Hope that works for you.

I'm interested...just started backpacking after a long break. I know the San Juans. Just did a 10-mile in & out backpack in along the Blue River in Az White Mtns. Everything sounds do-able. I'll waitlist if all that sounds like a fit for this trip...

All I have Created GPX routes for Our trip. I will bring my computer to the next meeting so I can share with all that bring a thumb drive. Also I stopped at wide world of maps on Southern just east of Arizona. They have or can order the National Geographic South san Juan Del Norte Trails Illustrated Map ( #142 ). It is everyones responsibility to have a Hard copy map of our hike. GPSs are great but batteries do not fail on hard copy maps.

Did pretty much this trip a couple of years ago. Only place I've ever been where the wildflowers were so thick you could smell them as you walked along. BUT count on daily rain.

Jim, this sounds great! I'm not much for fishing, but I'd like to attend. Waiting list was not open, so I just signed up. I've been meaning to get to this area.
