Winter in the Canyon Backpacking adventure - January 27-30, 2012

I have one opening for a Corridor Trip to the Grand Canyon.  (A series of last minute cancellations.)

This trip is to be an introduction to Grand Canyon Backpacking. While not a "beginner" backpack trip, it is perfect for backpackers who are ready to take on one of the world's most famous hikes. Are you ready?

Thursday: Drive to canyon, eat a good solid meal, stay at Maswik Lodge (not included**).

Friday: Breakfast at the Maswik Lodge Cafeteria. Take Hikers Bus to South Kaibab trail. Hike 6.8 miles down the South Kaibab Trail to the Bright Angel Campground (4,800' down). We will stop at Ooh Aah Point, Cedar Ridge, Skeleton Point, and at the Tip Off.

Saturday: Breakfast at the Canteen (5:30 am). (One of the best Breakfasts you will ever experience!) Hang out at Bright Angel Campground, recover or check out Ribbon Falls.

Sunday: Bright Angel Trail to Indian Gardens Campground - 4.7 miles (1,400' up). We will stop at the River Resthouse and just before the Devil’s corkscrew (to explore the falls of Garden Creek) before arriving at Indian Gardens. Optional day trip out to Plateau Point for sunset

Monday: Bright Angel Trail to the rim - 4.6 miles (3,400' up) - Time for celebratory meal and beverages!   We will return home Monday afternoon.

We can expect it to be cold at the South Rim, and cool at both Bright Angel and Indian Gardens. Average temperature for the South Rim High/Low for January/February is 43/20. Inner canyon High/Low for January/February is 59/39. We will need to be prepared for snow/ice on upper slopes of the South Kaibab and Bright Angel Trails. Instep Crampons and Hiking poles are highly recommended. Instep Crampons are available on Amazon (see CMI ICECLEAT Ice Cleats) or you may want to look at Yaxtrax).

If you've always wanted to hit the canyon, but were intimidated by more difficult or ambitious itineraries, this is just the trip for you! I hope to attract some experienced canyon hikers on the trip to provide support and whatever wisdom we can impart.

All participants will be pre-approved by hike leader.

Cost for this trip is $67.00 per person (Refund of $25 at the Trailhead) This includes permits and Breakfast at the Cantina at Phantom Ranch on Saturday Morning.. Fee's are due to secure your reservation.  No refunds are available unless the trip is canceled. (note: $25/vehicle park entrance fee to be split by occupants of each car)

Fees by PayPal to [address removed]  or by other agreements with Clyde.

** Note: Rooms at Maswik Lodge at the South Rim are available from and start at $85/night for a standard room with 2 Queen Beds for 2 people. Additional adults in the room are $9 a night.
