Hello fellow heathens,
A member of our group is working with a place here in town called Voices for Children. It's a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children in our community who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect. Their job is to basically advocate for the child's best needs in court until he or she gets placed into a permanent home (or goes back home). They rely on the willingness of volunteers to do this and become court appointed special advocates (CASA). These CASA volunteers put in over 7500 hours a year - of their free time - in order to help these children.
We're planning an upcoming event to find more volunteers willing to help out. These events are usually underwritten by a local business, and we'd like to get members of our local community groups involved. We feel that, as atheists, humanists, freethinkers, etc, we are particularly sensitive to the human condition. Also, it would be a great way to make the local community aware that we are good people too and nothing to be afraid of.
Anyway, we are setting up an event at The Village Cafe in downtown Bryan. The event is tentatively set for January 17th or 18th at The Village Cafe. We don't have to bring anything (except people) or raise any money. No one is expected to *do* anything. Just come and mingle with other people. I'd like to get this group more involved in more community centered events, and this could be one of them.
Let me know what you all think, and plan to come if you can. If you have an opinion, or any ideas to go along with this, then please let me know. I'll try to keep everyone posted as it gets closer to time for this.
Here is a link to the group's web page to get an idea of what they are about:
I hope that everyone is having a good week,
