Announcing a new Meetup for Bryan/College Station Atheist & Freethinkers!

What: Challenge the SBOE Rally!

When: Sunday, May 16, 2010 11:00 AM

Where:
Texas State Capitol
Congress @ 11th Street
Austin, TX 78701

The far-right extremists on the Texas State Board of Education recently proposed sweeping changes to the social studies curriculum. These changes include removing Thomas Jefferson from a world history standard about important Enlightenment thinkers, exaggerating (or outright lying about) the influence of religion on the Founders, downplaying the importance of the civil rights movement, and exaggerating the importance of conservatives such as Phyllis Schlafly, Newt Gingrich, and even Rush Limbaugh.

Are you disgusted by the SBOE's obvious attempt to make history more palatable to religious zealots? Are you appalled that Texas school children will be taught revisionist history? Are you sick and tired of Texas being the laughingstock of enlightened America?

Then let's do something about it! Join the ACA for a rally at the State Capitol on Sunday, May 16th, 2010. Bring your friends, neighbors, family members - anyone who cares what kind of education kids in Texas receive. We need 1000 people there to send a message to the SBOE and the Texas Lege - that religious and political ideologies aren't an appropriate foundation for a 21st century education.

Bring a lunch, sunscreen, and a sign - Separation of Church & State signs are particularly appropriate. You'll join members of other atheist, freethinker, and concerned citizen groups from across the state. More details to follow as we get closer to the rally.

If you have kids in the public school system and would be willing to speak at the rally, please contact Jen Peeples at cochair@atheist-community.org. Parents whose kids are directly affected by these new standards have a powerful impact on public officials.
