Let's kick back and watch a movie together on this Friday night. We'll socialize starting at 7 and begin the film at 7:30 sharp.

SYNOPSIS:
Written and directed by Deepa Mehta. Banned in India, Fire is the first film to confront lesbianism in a culture adamantly denying such a love could ever exist. Shabana Azmi shines as Radha Kapur in this taboo-breaking portrayal of contemporary India and the hidden desires that threaten to defy traditional expectations. In a barren arranged marriage to an amateur swami who seeks enlightenment through celibacy, Radha's life takes an irresistible turn when her beautiful young sister-in-law (Nandita Das as Sita) seeks to free herself from the confines of her own loveless marriage, and into the supple embrace of Radha. Turns out that the follow-up movies in the trilogy (Earth, and Water) are not about the protagonists of this film. Filmmaker Deepa Mehta set out to create a portrait of contemporary India with these films. Even more interesting that the plot of Fire is the first story she chose to tell.

The analization of the movie gave me a better insight of what it was about. Looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.

Intense movie with much symbolism, brilliantly written and acted. Wonderful discussion afterwards with lots of insights and information sharing. One of our more interesting films. Nicky says it's a trilogy, so watch for future installments. Also, we'll have Jorjet show Sita Plays the Blues when she comes this summer.
