Y+30ers, I am thrilled to announce that our next Y+30 is going to be on October 7th. The 92nd Street Y has offered to host us at their awesome Tribeca location, so we are going on a bit of a field trip...

In October we turn our attention to Philanthropy. How will increased bandwidth and communication specifically, and technology generally, change the nature of philanthropy? What is unlikely to change? What trends seem fairly probable and what wildcards may be on the horizon? We will host a panel and a discussion with some of those driving the change and thinking deeply about the future of giving.

panel includes
Emily Bergantino from Malaria No More
Lane Wood from Charity Water
Oliver Hurst-Hiller from Donors Choose
Matthew Blumberg, GridRepublic
Nate Westheimer, New York Tech Meetup & Social Media Committee - People for the American Way

We want your participation if this topic particularly interests you.... Historically we have put together the whole panel without the input of the membership -- but we want to try changing that... do you want to participate on the philanthropy panel yourself? know someone that would make a great participant? -- let us know -- email [masked] with your idea.

event at the 92nd st Y in Tribeca

A donation request if you attend Because the 92nd street Y is setting everything up for us, bar, actual soundsystem, etc. there is actual cost to this one. We are going to ask for a $10 donation per person to attend... if this is a real hardship, email me and we will work it out, but it helps the Y cover their costs for helping us put on an great program in their awesome space. (The Y+30 is not taking compensation -- we don't have any real costs and this is a labor of love)

I was at the Singularity Summit this past weekend & heard Peter Thiel (PayPal/ Clarium Capital founder) & Eliezer Yukkowsky talk about changing the world. They agreed the less something is getting attention, the more "marginal efforts" matter. As much attention as Water, Climate Change & Education are getting, Thiel was adamant about not "imitating" others - Philanthropy should be used for "Existential Risk Preventions!" http://bit.ly/7tQyt Check out @whitneyhess 's amazing tweets of the Summit.
